    Tips for brooding geese

I'll take a stab at this. Me personally, I can't get a waterfowl starter crumbles, so I use unmedicated chick starter to raise them. I haven't had any issues YET. But that doesn't mean I always won't! I also take them outside when the temp is 60 or higher for some time in the yard to get...

    Metzer Farms goose order

and now instead of hanging out by the light, they hang at the end of their pen that I open that let's them out to hang out with me. Stinkers! They get quite vocal when I'm not there to talk to them.

    Metzer Farms goose order

I was able to contact Metzer Farms showing them the picture. The top of the bill could in fact be an injury gotten in shipping. But that doesn't negate the bottom bill jutting out, out of place. So I was told I could either have them ship me another gosling plus a duckling friend for the...

    Metzer Farms goose order

Now here's the only odd thing I've found with this group, I have one gosling that came to me with a deformed beak. Look closely. Her bottom actually sticks out just a wee bit right now from below her top rather than fitting under her top like normal. But she eats fine as far as I can see...

    Metzer Farms goose order

Just had to share. I got my babies in yesterday, and they are really settling in. I talked to them from the start and stuck with them while they warmed up, got food and water. And now have accepted me as one of their own. And talk back to me when I go by their pen if I say anything. When I...

My 2018 McMurray Hatchery order. Columbian Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex and Leghorns.

Ok, now I've been to McMurray's website and realize that the rare chick is a Faverolle, not a Sultan. Cool. Now I'd love for it to be a hen but...but...yeah it's probably a rooster!

My 2018 McMurray Hatchery order. Columbian Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex and Leghorns.

Just had to share some pictures of my morning... My order from McMurray Hatchery is in. I ordered 12 Speckled Sussex, 6 Columbian Wyandottes, 7 Pearl White Leghorns (of which there are actually 8, they sent an extra. And then the rare chick that I now think is a Sultan. All chicks alive and...

    Docile breeds with wildtype coloring?

ha ha! exactly how my wife feels, at least about rhode island red roosters!

    Docile breeds with wildtype coloring?

I have to disagree on American Games being jerks. For millennia that breed was used in fighting...and a bird that would turn on it's handler to fight would of course lose the intended chicken to chicken fight. I've read some of those gamefowl books that tell you to get rid of any rooster that...

d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

I don't have video, but yes, they are loud, and very shrill high pitch end... so yes, not a bird to have in town! The neighbors WILL hear them.

    Kholmogory geese

never heard of it...but if you can't get them, could one breed it by crossing an Embden with a "Super African" and then select from there?

Choosing a Hatchery - Ideal poultry?

In the end, for me, I had a specific date I wanted to get my goslings. Ideal couldn't get me Embdens for that date, so I just went with Metzers as I do like how they put grogel in the boxes for the babies to eat while shipping. And from hearing how their quality is higher versus other...

Choosing a Hatchery - Ideal poultry?

After seeing the pricing, I feel Metzers is outrageous for sexed buff goslings, and will be going with Ideal Poultry this year.

Choosing a Hatchery - Ideal poultry?

yeah, that's a huge difference. In some breeds, the ganders are cheaper than straight run prices. This does totally change how I'm going to have to do an order if I want both sexes. No way do I want to pay the price they are charging for sexed birds versus what they are charging straight run.

I just looked at the updated prices too...and about fell over...wow! prices are really going up!

Choosing a Hatchery - Ideal poultry?

Metzers has expanded over time on breeds and they still run a LOT of birds and are about production rather than looks like a small time breeder who shows would be. But yeah, geese aren't cheap are they... maybe this will be the year I build a winter pen for them to live in instead of buying...

Choosing a Hatchery - Ideal poultry?

I don't recall the Geese and Muscoveys having any issues at all. They didn't hang out together either for that matter. I think again it's an individual basis reaction more than anything. They certainly do get along in city parks. But I think the key here is making sure all the birds have...

Choosing a Hatchery - Ideal poultry?

yes, I too found the ganders in the flock to be the ones doing the main interaction with me, where the girls are more shy. With my bunch that I had, the shyest was the Toulouse girl. All of them got the same exposure to me but it was the Toulouse gander that always took the lead when running...

Getting geese for first time in spring

I find geese to be far less messy than ducks, and hardier than chicks to raise. But I agree with the above post, yes they may make noise, and posture, and flap their wings at a predator. But if the predator isn't bluffed, it's a dead goose! I did feel the goose flock kept the avian predators...
