That's what I thought too. He is a neighbor and it's always best to help a neighbor than rat on them. He is out of work, and as far as I can tell, on a meager income. I just hope he will allow me to continue to help, and not be offended. I went over early this morning and the chickens were...
It was 18 below zero the first night, and at least 10 to 20 below the next 2 nights. I don't know exactly when they died, but I am sure that exposure, no food and water for 3-4 days caused the bantie's deaths.
When I gave the remaining 7 food and water, the roosters literally dived into the...
I cut them a path through the snow so they can come over again. My chicken moved out of our big chicken house and moved into the dog house after the other chickens left. I put up a perch in there and a shelf up by the ceiling. The chicken house is full of furniture right now, but there is...
He was pretty embarrassed and admitted he was wrong for not having a coop. He said he would try and get them a shelter asap. I hate to be judgmental but he's the lazy type and I don't think he'll get it done.
I feel sooo bad, that I didn't go get them the night of the storm. It's a big...
I just wanted to express my grief with fellow chicken lovers. I am the owner of just one chicken, because I gave my flock away last summer, being down on my luck and unable to properly take care of them. I live in a very small town and my neighbors free range chickens, including 3 awesomely...
I feel for you Peepsicle. My hen isn't doing any better today either. Yesterday she kept trying to put weight on her leg and even took off hopping across the yard. Today she doesn't even want to stand up.
I had a hen with prolapse, but the prolapse didn't kill her. She (obviously not feeling good) fell off of her perch and broke her neck.... Very important to keep her safe and confined until she is better.
I have the same problem except my hen got attacked by another hen. Thank goodness my daughter heard the commotion and rescued her. She has been in the house in a box for 3 days now and she has shown some improvement but she won't put any weight on one of her legs. She tries once in a while...
I wish I knew what is going on with their feathers. My chickens only seem interested in the mice if one happens to cross their path during the day. When they settle in at night, the chickens will watch the mice run around on the floor below, but won't bother to get them. Their roosts are 3 &...
Three of my smaller hens have all their feathers and so does the rooster. The rest are pretty plucked. The mice seem to be very afraid of the chickens but they aren't afraid of me. However the chickens are usually "in bed" when the mice come out to play and they don't bother getting up!
I have a mouse problem in my chicken house. I noticed my chickens have broken and missing feathers on their backs, but I thought it was because of an over aggressive roo. He usually ends up with feathers in his beak after doing "his thing".... Could it really be the mice crawling up on my...

She may or may not. I have a hen who usually tolerates me messing with her, (moving her, candleing, cleaning out busted eggs, etc.) while broody and she will stay broody. Yesterday, I was spraying to coop down with "poultry protector" while she was taking a potty break and my roo got...
I moved my hen while hatching eggs during a blizzard and power outage last spring. Her nesting box is a small plastic tote. I simply took another tote and placed it upside down over the top of her and the eggs and moved the whole thing. She barely even noticed and settled right back down to...
I would like to know how long chickens will live under good care. I haven't seen anything regarding the life spans of chickens, but am guessing it varies by breed.
I have Easter eggers, Sexlinks RR's & Rw"s, a Japanese Bantam, a barred plymouth Roo, and an egger/black cochin mix.
I would like...
I have 4 EE chicks and 4 sexlinks. They are all very friendly but the ees more so than the sexlinks. One egger chick in particular is very calm and sweet.
However, I used to have an Egger rooster and he was a mean little sucker.
Try to get it off. I always put the chick in my left hand with my hand over its top and wings with it's butt poking out between my thumb and forefinger. I hold it close to my tummy, that way the chick doesn't freak out. Seems to work pretty good.
then I get a bowl of warm water with a...
Great! Thank you for the info! I ended up getting 4 eggers and 4 golden sex links. They are sooo cute. I had been trying to hatch out chicks of my own from my barred Rock Roo and a Japanese bantam (I had 4 chickens but now down to these 2 adults).....The poor guy just can't get them...
