Ooooh, 33 degrees. Yes, that is cold. Soon you will be warm enough for outside. (Or your babies will be big enough to brave the cold). Winter has to end some day, doesn't it? :0
Sad to report that we lost the bantams. :( It is so sad to watch them struggle and go down hill. You would be holding one as it took it's last breath and others you would comeback a few minutes later and it would be still. We have never had this type of loss.........
Up above I said that...
Not sure if I would order again from McMurray. This is only my second time ordering from them. We ordered about 4 years ago with good luck on our part of the order. Split order with a friend and she had some loses right out of the box. First order from four years ago - Nice birds - mille...
There is a price difference between Meyers and McM. Not much per bird, but when you add it up over, let's say, 25 chicks it could be a couple of bucks. Is either one lower on shipping costs? I know the quality of McM birds is pretty good, but Meyers looks cheaper?
Agreed, that I could breed...
I found my e-mails from last time (2009) and it looks like we used McMurray. So, looks like I'll use them again. Darn, because Meyers had chick sold as "olive eggers" that I wanted to try. :(
I really wish I could remember. The chicks we got were great stock. We never had a problem and all were healthy. I have been leaning towards Meyers because they have all the breeds I want plus olive egger and Ameraucana, plus bantams. But I think McMurray could be good as well. One of our...
It has been a couple of years since we ordered from the online hatcheries and I can't remember where I've gotten them from. It was either Meyer's, McMurray or Ideal. We had no problems with whoever it was so I would use them again and they were very good chickens. Does anyone have a...
Thanks gilavia and barngoddess! Very helpful. I had not seen side sprigs before and none of mine have any yet. Is there an age when they develop? Mine are about 5 months, so if they were going to get some, would they have them already?
I know I promised pictures earlier but just got around to updating this. As it stands it looks like predictions at about 3 weeks were correct (and some of you knew even earlier).
Efron, Tyson and Meaty are all cockerels and Zane and Bebe were the pullets. Here are updated pictures. Meaty...
Here are my three BCM roosters that are 5 months old. We like Meaty the best and the other two are hard to tell apart but they are Efron and Tyson. Both Efron and Tyson are destined for freezer camp as we want to keep Meaty for breeding with the two hens to make more Meaties and hens. Meaty...
Hi, OP here. At 3 1/2 months I wanted to post my updates and will try to get pictures up this after this weekend. For those keeping score, Chick #1 Effie/Efron turned out to be a roo. Chick #2 Tyson is also a roo. Chick # 3 Zane is a pullet :) Chick #4 Dakota/Pepe/Meaty is a big boy and...
Took the 4 week pictures but didn't get time to post. Most look similar to the three week pictures. Boys very obvious by combs and wattles, girls still small combs that are yellow. Will try to post pictures tomorrow when I get back to town.
I know, right? We don't get it either. The ones that are super developed (#3, #4 & #5) have been fed the same food, same treats, same environment (hot temps), almost same everything. The only difference is we rigged up one of those chicken nipple waterers and used a sheetrock/spackle bucket...
I'll continue to post updates for others who have BCMs and want to see.
So far - color, pattern at birth didn't matter. Comb size at birth didn't matter, but did start to matter after about week 2. Comb color mattered between weeks 2-3. Leg size didnt matter when they were a week old, but...
