Just for completeness, the breeder in Oregon that was eluded to was near Junction City OR. We picked up some birds back in 2013 if I recall and came from that breeder but I don't recall the name any longer and frankly dont know if they're still in business or not.
I posted this on the LA Urban Chicken Enthusiast group already regarding today's 7pm meeting in the West Annex of City Hall - the council members were there to listen to the city members and get pros/cons for each topic and see if there was sufficient info to move forward or not...
So.. kinda...
Ours got acustomed to the nipples in about a day.. Unfortunately ours stopped working after about 3 months and water would not come out well even after cleaning so we ditched them in favor of a pan of water.. We've decided to move to a plumbed cup water that they can drink out of.. Oh well..
Thanks all.. How about using a Kuhl R-30 feeder -- or their HF-20G hanging feeder (looks kinda like kuntrygirl's in the above photo) -- anyone use either one? I don't necessarily need one that hangs.. I just need one that does not need attention daily. Our current galvanized unit will not drop...
Thanks.. In our case the birds have been laying for the past 7 months and our current feeder does not spill that much but does require daily 'work' to ensure there is food for the birds. The current feeder can be completely full of food but the gravity feature just does not work -- there can be...
Hi.. So we have a flock of 4 hens right now and we are using (and have been using) a ~2 gallon size (~12-14" tall) metal feeder that we got from a local feed place. It works to a point but we must hand-drop the food daily as the food 'dust' clogs the bottom and the gravity feed does not work at...
We've got 4 of these birds -- we got them from Cuntrybumkin above.. We picked them up in mid August and they're doing great.. One of them is developing a bit slower than the other 3 and all of them love to fly around the box we're keeping them in until they're a little older. Even though we...
Wendy.. If you get a chance, I'd love to know how loud these types of birds are? We've only had Auracana's and Buff Orps and the auracanas are a bit noisier than I'd like but I'm curious about these birds if we wanted to get some for a residential area -- just curious..

Hmm.. We did one bird on Saturday -- albeit it was a 13 month old Auracana and the smell of the wet feathers stuck in my nose for a day.. Eww.. We had to keep the front and back door to the house open to let the breeze through.. Perhaps next time we'll do it outside and maybe it won't...
Thanks All! I think you've answered my questions!
To summarize what I've gleaned :
1) Old chickens are >12 weeks old
2) Old chickens require resting in the fridge for multiple days (e.g. 13 month old = ~5-7 days of resting per the earlier example) and as long as 2 weeks (or more?)
3)...

So, you're of the opinion that doing a quick removal is better (at least until I can find the artery) and that in terms of slow cooking, we're talking about boiling more or less for the cooking or can we follow what is done for pork ribs (low heat -- perhaps 225F for several hours)...

Ahh.. Now we're getting somewhere.. So, if I want to BBQ a bird and prefer to minimize the gamy flavor, it's best to rest the bird for close to a week before using.. In terms of resting, is that just a matter of putting it in a closed bag and plopping her into the fridge at the normal...
Hi all..
So one of the 13 month old hens was exceptionally noisy (for MANY months now -- waking up and wanting out at 5:15AM every day) and we didn't want to get in trouble with the neighbors so it was time last Saturday to fix the "problem"... So, I watched a few videos on Youtube and...
Here's some more pics -- not quite done but in a usable state..
Here's a closer view of the coop end.. The small rectangles of plywood above the coop are vents that haven't yet been installed but will be this weekend.. Those pieces are there to keep the birds in and other critters out for...

Well.. We had some basic ideas on what we wanted after looking at some fancy coops.. Ultimately we changed the design numerous times as we went along.. It was actually good that it took multiple weekends to get done as it allowed us to look things over and think things thru to work as...
