Moving back to the area soon and thinking of a few backyard chickens in westfield. Is it worth it to go to town hall and apply for a permit first, or just get my self a few hens without a permit? I'll be in a pretty quiet area with almost an acre.
So, maybe this is a silly question....but if my hen successfully hatches these eggs, should i just leave them in the pen with mom and dad? Or should I move them to a seperate brooder?
It is only her and her mate, and they are in a pretty big guinea pig cage. the bottom plastic part is about 8 inches tall, with wire going up about another foot. I don't think I'll have to clean it much, and will try not to bother her. She is just nesting out in the open, on top of some...
So, it's been six days since I move a pair of button quail into a bigger cage, with some more privacy...and my hen laid six eggs, and is now sitting on them! I don't know if she'll stick to it, but we'll see. I don't want any more buttons, but I don't have the heart to take them away from her...
I have some assorted button quail that I will be looking to relocate to a happy home!
I currently have 13, and that is more than I ever planned on having. I will be looking to get rid of at about seven. Probably four boys/three girls. They are for pickup only in Springfield, MA. They are...
I am getting lots of eggs of my own now! Well, I had to switch cages, so no eggs for about four days now, but I think they'll get over it.
I have a pair seperated (because the male is NASTY to the rest of the buttons, except his 'girlfriend') and I get an egg everyday from my girl.
I have...
I had my buttons in something almost identical to this, the only problem I had was that they would try to jump out when I opened the top. I prefer something with a door. I bought a guinea pig cage on carigslist for $20 and it's working great so far.
My buttons are 6 1/2 weeks old, and I came home today to find the cutest little egg in their cage!
I don't know who the culprit was, but congrats to her! Last week I started to notice the hormone driven little boys mating....errrr well.... trying to mate the girls. They are hilarious!
Hahahaha, glad I was able to give you a laugh!
I'll tell you though, this little guy gives me a laugh when he attacks me. I dont think he realizes how big I am... or how small he is.
So, I have one button that is about three months old. He was very friendly and always let me pick him up, probably because he was alone for a little while. I have some 5week olds in with him, and they have been together for about two weeks already. The little guys are pretty jumpy around me, but...
I just found this online. Don't really know anything about them though.

I agree with Kullas. If you put the waterer on the "cold" end of the brooder, they wont go in it as much. They might be too cold if they are climbing in the water (because the water feels warmer) try lowering your lamp a little too. Maybe give them something to snuggle with like a little stuffed...
So, I had a fairly good had on button eggs. 16 of 24 hatched.
They seemed to be doing alright, but there were a couple that seemed smaller/weaker than the rest.
This morning when I woke up, I found two babies dead in the brooder. One was a weak one that I had already noticed, and the other...
You might try putting them together, but with a divider of some sorts for a few days so they can get used to each other, but it's probably best to keep the age groups seperated. I wish you the best of luck!
