    MysteryChicken's, Flock.

I found the "restricted" list here: https://www.animallaw.info/administrative/me-exotic-pets-chapter-7-regulations-wildlife-captivity#s7.18 "2. Category 1 Restricted Species: The following species are listed as Category 1 Restricted species, unless they are identified in another category in...

    MysteryChicken's, Flock.

Where did it say that? Because I found them on the list of "unrestricted species." So now I'm getting really confused.

    MysteryChicken's, Flock.

I followed the link to the .pdf list On that list, I did a search for "pheasant" and it turned up "All Species in Subfamily Phasianinae (Pheasants, Peafowl)" I do see an asterisk noting that there are exceptions for ones listed as endangered species. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phasianinae...

Google turned up this site for me: https://www.maine.gov/ifw/fish-wildlife/captivity/index.html The section on "Unrestricted species" has a link to a list of what animals can be owned without a permit.

    Fish food for chickens?

Fish food should not hurt the chickens. Small amounts of fish food should not change the taste of the eggs or meat. So you could give little bits until it's gone. If you have any partly-grown pullets who are not laying yet, you could give them the fish food without worrying about the flavor of...

Maybe useful for any animal behavior scientists

Many, many cockerels and roosters "learn" aggressive behavior all by themselves, with no demonstrators. I would say that more than half of the posts I see about aggressive cockerels are from flocks with no other males, so I might speculate that having other males around can reduce the rate of...

Are They Eating Too Much Calcium?

That is one "treat" that I don't worry about with chickens, because it is mostly water. So I figure they may drink less plain water to compensate, but that is not a problem. In general, the 10% guideline for treats is meant for cases where you trust the main food to provide everything the...

Chickens addicted to cat food! Will a cat door keep them out?

I saw someone put a bit of chicken feed in a dish, then add raw eggs and stir it a little. It no longer looks like eggs, but the chickens still get the nutrition. If you are worried about the chickens figuring it out, crack the eggs where the chickens cannot see you. Obviously the shells would...

    Hormonal caponizing?

Thank you for the detailed update! Even though it's not a happy outcome for most of the cockerels :( at least people can learn from this, rather than having to start from scratch figuring things out.

Things you wish you could say

Yikes! It sounds like those chickens did have a real reason to be screaming! (From your previous post, I had assumed the chickens were just screaming for a reason that people consider unimportant in the middle of the night.)

What breed AND gender is this?

I can't take a picture, since I'm not the one with the chickens, but I see the original poster did. To me, they still look like young examples of standard-size chickens. Weighing them might sort it out, but otherwise I think the only way to tell is to wait and see.

TIL: Fence top roller bars - do they keep chickens in?

I was just re-reading an old thread, and spotted this post: If you want it in context, it is on page two of this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/alternative-to-clipping-wings.1197805/ The idea is similar to the roller bar, but uses a thin string (easier & cheaper to put up...

What breed AND gender is this?

I thought they looked like they will be normal large fowl size after they finish growing up. What makes you sure they are bantams?

    What ended up happening?

I’m not sure what’s happening with these chicks but their crops are really full and won’t stop trying to eat.

That would depend on what time zone they are in. If it is evening, I agree that removing the food should be fine (not necessary, but not a problem either). But if there are still several hours of day left, I would leave the food available until evening. I agree about keeping the water available...

Chickens addicted to cat food! Will a cat door keep them out?

Try chick starter, and provide a separate source of calcium (such as oyster shell.) The only thing that makes a feed "layer" is the calcium level. If you provide the calcium separately, laying hens can do well with pretty much any complete chicken feed (chick starter, grower, all flock, flock...

    Bush Alaska Newbie

Some ideas for things you might want to learn more about: --eggs can be stored in the refrigerator for quite a few weeks. If you just want eggs, if might be easier to buy a bunch of them every month or so, rather than actually raising chickens that need care every single day. If you want to...

Chickens addicted to cat food! Will a cat door keep them out?

It probably varies a bit by country. In the USA, the label must list the ingredients in descending order by weight. Yes, the manufacturer can list same-weight ingredients in any order. So if the first two ingredients are "Chicken by-product meal, ground yellow corn," that means the amount of...

    new chicken breed

I'm glad you already have experience with feathered feet, and that they work for you! Sometimes people come on here with lots of ideas and no experience at all, and other times people have lots of experience with chickens even when they are new to the forum, and I am no good at guessing which...
