MysteryChicken's, Flock.

One thing I want to find out is if I need a license, or permit to own ring neck pheasants in Maine?

I'll probably ask in a different thread as well tomorrow. Thought I'd share my question here first.

I didn't see anything about pheasants in there.
I followed the link to the .pdf list
On that list, I did a search for "pheasant" and it turned up "All Species in Subfamily Phasianinae (Pheasants, Peafowl)"

I do see an asterisk noting that there are exceptions for ones listed as endangered species.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phasianinae
Wikipedia says ring neck pheasants are in that group

On my desktop computer, it's easy to use ctrl + F to "find" the word I am looking for (might be a different command on different brands of computer). It saves a lot of time compared with trying to read an 18 page list of species!

Okay, I just found my answer. I would need a category 2 Restricted species permit for personal use.
I was hoping I could actually own large pheasants without any special permits here. Oh, well.
Where did it say that? Because I found them on the list of "unrestricted species."

So now I'm getting really confused.

Peafowl require the permit as well, which is stupid.

Chickens fall in the same family, Phasianidae, so not sure what these people who make these regulations were thinking?

I found the "restricted" list here:
https://www.animallaw.info/administ...hapter-7-regulations-wildlife-captivity#s7.18

"2. Category 1 Restricted Species: The following species are listed as Category 1 Restricted species, unless they are identified in another category in this Chapter or are on the Unrestricted List:"

Subsection E for "Aves" (birds) includes
(15)Family PhasianidaeAll Species in Family Phasianidae (Pheasants, Grouse, and Allies)"

But the unrestricted list included "All Species in Subfamily Phasianinae (Pheasants, Peafowl)"

So I think that means you need a permit for everything in family Phasianidae EXCEPT the ones on the unrestricted list (subfamily phasianinae).

That would mean no permit needed for ring neck pheasants or peafowl or chickens, but yes a permit for the various ones that are not in that subfamily.

Obviously you should check that with whoever issues permits, or with a lawyer, or with someone else who is actually qualified to interpret it properly. I'm not any of those.
