I have no experience with an onyx olive egger but a quick google search says it’s a Marans X Legbar hybrid. I’ve heard those call Marsbars. Probably just different hatchery using different names for the same cross. If you breed your Marans rooster to them any female would have a 50% chance of...

Anyone know the gender or more importantly breed of my chicken? suspecting female but no idea on breed, came out of a "normal" brown egg

Based on comb it’s very likely a cockerel. If the egg wasn’t sold as any specific breed of hatching egg it’s probably a mixed breed. Without knowing anything about the parent flock there are way to many possibilities to make any sort or accurate guess on breed on a chick this young

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

I posted in a Bresse Facebook group and a couple people said they have seen it before. From what I have seen it’s definitely something you should try to eliminate but since I’m not trying to raise show birds I’ll prioritize table qualities over feathers and cull out any feathered legs once I’m...

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

The Bresse are now 8 weeks old I leg banded the pullets for identification and took everyone’s weight today Green band 1044 grams. Her legs are a bit to close together for my liking but I only have 3 pullets to work with so she gets a pass until I hatch a better one Green band 1042 grams. I...

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

@wrathsfarm here are the two other blue cockerels. If I were to keep one for future breeding I believe it would be whichever of these two has the best temperament. The smaller comb and lack of wattles would make them a lot less prone to frostbite. Plus I do like the looks of the beard feathers...

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

I have 2 more blue cockerels with Smokey in the main coop. I’ll try to get a decent picture of those ones.

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

I moved the 5 mixed breed cockerels out of the Bresse pin into the tractor this evening. They are almost 8 weeks old. I left the 3 pullets in. I might leave the pullets in there to help share the love from the 2 Bresse cockerels. I don’t see any harm in have an off breed female in the pin I...

This is your thread, there is no need to feel bad about posting things like this. At the end of the day you are the one living with your livestock and you did what you felt necessary. I’m sure it was the correct decision.

I’m just getting started on the Bresse I bought a dozen eggs in July. 6 hatched but one failed to thrive and died a week or two later. So I currently have 3 pullets and 2 cockerels to try to make into a breeding program.

I currently have the main coop, the grow out pin, my Bresse breeding pin, an IBC tote tractor, another IBC tote on hand to build another tractor, a 6x8 dog kennel for grow outs and an electric poultry net. So I have some flexibility on space for summer weather but when the snow starts falling I...

I have some 8 week old pullets that will go to a friend of the family who is looking to expand her flock. The cockerels and older hens will go to the freezer unless someone specifically asks me for them. I can’t in good conscience sell someone a layer past her prime. You can learn a lot by...

This sounds like chicken math done right. Making the subtractions is my least favorite part but sometimes it’s necessary to move the flock in the direction you want it to go. I need to thin my flock before winter. I have 2 Easter Eggers, 2 Wyandottes and maybe an olive egger that need to go.

I’m glad to hear your free ranging went well. My Barred Rock is probably my most chill hen. She mostly ignores any new chicks I add. It’s the EEs that are always causing trouble. They set at the bottom of the pecking order and always act like they have something to prove when the little ones...

This is what I do as well. Grab a lawn chair, a beverage of your choice, and some sort of chicken feed or scratch to distract any hens that might get a little too rough. Just be sure to scatter enough in different places that you don’t create a fight over one pile of food. I have never had to...

    Wrath's Marans

I’ve never seen a day old Ayam Cemani but I believe they have more of a game bird body type and lay small to medium eggs. so I would expect them to be smaller than a Marans chick.

I’m mostly happy with it but if I were to do it again I would change the roof. I’m not sure exactly what I would do differently but as it is I have banged my head on the roof so many times and still haven’t learned to duck. I did add foam to cushion it but it’s still in the way.

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

Around sunset once all the chicks were safely inside the coop portion and I didn’t have to worry about running anybody over, I moved the coop onto fresh grass. I figured out that if I remove the water bucket that takes around 30 pounds off that front wheel and it pushes well enough. I have to...

    Straub’s search for colored eggs

Egg production is down a bit and most of the older birds are in various stages of molt. Smokey’s chicks are now 7 weeks old and getting more independent every day. They still all roost together at night. The grow outs in the breeding pin are all doing well. They took right to the automatic...

For what it’s worth I don’t believe you traumatized her. My Momma hens are always pretty stressed the first few days. It’s a lot of change for her and she’s trying to figure things out. They always teach the chicks to keep their distance from me. The good part is that momma will show them who to...
