I found this- which would my free range flock be like? The broiler breeders? I assume they are vaccinated for longest life (long by commercial standards anyways)...
Is there a poultry vaccination schedule somewhere? I am considering hatching eggs (incubator) and want to make sure they are protected.
We live in California and have a suspected Mareks bird, if that matters.
I wish I could post a video, it's not a preference to sit...she cannot walk, she has no balance and can barely stand in one place. 3-5 steps is no exaggeration and I'm not sure you could even call them steps; she stands up and stumbles a few times before falling down, wings flapping and...
Culling is not an option at my house! I will humanely euthanize if need be, but never will I kill my animals as a precaution; they're part of the family thru sickness and health.
Anyways, I would love your thoughts- I'll PM you. Thank you!
The blood work and X-rays looked for internal disease- her calcium was (is still?) low and WBC were up a bit, which she got meds for. But that's the only abnormality anyone found. No new flock members, but we moved to the country a year ago- lots of new wildlife.
I was surprised when she...
My other birds are rescues- I have no idea if they've been vaxed
Ethel I bought from farmsupply, I assumed everyone was properly vaccinated. Hatcheries are usually on top of that stuff, I thought. The vet said it's too late to vax now
My 5year old barred rock hasn't been walking since December. She takes 3-5 stumbly steps and lays/falls down. Maybe 3 months ago she started open mouth breathing on and off all day. She left the flock and became a house chicken in December, which doesn't seem to bother her- she's imprinted...
The lap picture isn't a great display of her color- she always gets really pale sitting in my lap. But you can see she isn't very bright in the walking pics
I left town for 2 weeks and was worried about my girl, but she was fine and even had a full crop when I got home :celebrate
It's raining today and freezing (we live in CA so by freezing I mean low 60s) so she's cuddled up in my lap as I type this-keeping each other warm (it would prob help if I...
So far so good!! I THINK she feels a little heavier. This week I started giving her 1ml of nutridrench every morning.
This is what her poo looks like. When I first noticed the problem it was mostly clear, with only a few solid lumps-so I would say this is an improvement??
And here's my...
No- I haven't been adding vitamins to the water. A couple of years ago she was feather picking and I continually dosed her with nutri drench -which seemed to help....I'll pick some of that up on Monday (orrrr maybe I've still got some somwhere ??)
Thanks for the aloe tip!! I will def try this!!
Since I posted this...has it been a week yet?? My days run together...she's been getting an egg every morning, usually some cheese in the afternoon (along with grapes, sunflower seeds, oats, tomatoes, yogurt, blueberries, noodles, corn, peas, squash, etc- I mix it up depending on what the humans...
She's looking pretty good! I've been giving her a homemade breakfast and dinner, which she eats and then rejoins the others. One night I got home late, pulled her off the roost for dinner -her crop was totally empty and she only took a few nibbles and wanted to go back to bed. Since, I've made...
We spend an exceptional amount of time at the vet, unfortunately. (Every 2-4 weeks with my internal layer)
The implant was suprelorin - it's a hormonal implant that is suppose to shut down the ovaries. Often used on parrots. He wasn't sure how long it would last on a chicken-typically lasts a...
Her friend was an internal layer-6mo battle with peritonitis, ascites, possible other internal issues. She had the implant and she stopped laying, but I think it was a day late, dollar short :(
Anyways, this emaciated girl has a bowl of food on the deck, but when she started molting she...
Help- my girl is going thru a big molt, which allowed me to see that she is terribly underweight....she has next to no breast muscle, very prominent keel- actually caves in on either side :,(
She is the lowest girl, very skittish around the other birds. Almost 4 years old, seems healthy...
I, too, originally got chickens for eggs...but very quickly realized what sweet, endearing creatures they are. Now I just take in rescued hens-don't even care about the eggs.
