Ones of my baby chicks with broody mum died - 1 week old

Neither of us will really know for sure but I've made my peace with it in that I really don't think I could have done anything and I doubt you could, either. I certainly played around with thoughts for days after...But, chicks die unfortunately just like adults hens, often with no obvious...

Ones of my baby chicks with broody mum died - 1 week old

I'm so sorry to hear this. I don't know the answer but I had a very similar thing happen, one of my two chicks just died at about ten days old. I was told it was very unlikely the mother hen would have trampled on her. We also have an Omlet Eglu (and Cube for the others) and have successfully...

So...we tried to introduce Ma hen and her chick back into the flock

I'd have liked not to have separated her but with our set up at the moment we had to. Next time perhaps we will do things differently! And what if there is blood??

So...we tried to introduce Ma hen and her chick back into the flock

Our set up is that we have four chickens who were all raised from one day olds together. Betty, our maran, went broody back in late June so we put some eggs under her and now she has a 3.5 week old chick called Yoyo. Betty and Yoyo are in their separate run next to the main WIR where they can...

    All Black Flock

I know, sorry for the ending. It IS sad. Had I known of course...But she had a great life and was much loved. I think it's great yours get calmed by your singing. Mine respond to my call. It's so nice!

    All Black Flock

Wow they are gorgeous. WE had an awesome black orpington which the farmer didn't want to sell to us (she wasn't quite right bless her but my daughter really wanted her). We bought her and gave her a really good home for some years. She never laid, never scratched but was so stately and...

    One of our chicks died

I guess the answer to this is that it's one of those things but...we hatched two live chicks under a broody on 13th July. They were doing so well, no sign of problems at all but this morning only one came out of the coop and when we went to have a look, Sunny was dead in the nest. Sunny looked...

Is Scarlett a she or he?

He’s a lovely roo. Our local farmer takes ours. Sometimes she can sell them on, sometimes she can’t.

What's a more natural feed? aka: what did my grandparents feed their chickens?

We feed our hens on organic layers' pellets. TBH I've no real idea what's in them. What's a more natural feed? What do you feed your laying hens? What would my grandparents have fed their chickens (they were farmers and kept them but unfortunately not here to ask). A

Great thank you. Two more Qs (sorry). What is a saddled air cell and what is a shipped egg? (One which whose 'ship has sailed?')

@Kiraeh can I ask you something please? There’s an egg further up where you say “if your eggs looks like this get your brooder ready cos it’s got 24/36 hours left” - sorry to be so thick but what makes you say that? What is it about the egg? Cos I thought (from the pic) you were going to say it...

    Dead chicken

I'm so sorry to hear this. I have had this happen with seemingly healthy chickens and I never got to the bottom of why. It's always 'my' chicken too.

    One Chick Hatched Others Didn't

If they don't hatch or pip soon and talk to the mother she will make the decision to abandon them anyway and follow her chick. That's what I learnt!
