Good morning, Eggcessive. :) I have this on hand. Do you think this would be better than the ‘Smarty Pants’? I just don’t know if the magnesium would be bad for the chick.
Thanks. I’ll have to check if that’s available at one of the stores before sending him back into town. Otherwise, I guess I’m going to try this... :hmm
Hi all. I have a 2 day old baby chick that is walking on it’s hocks. I thought it was splay leg and did the little straw and rubber band to fix that, but now I’m leaning more a slipped tendon or vitamin deficiency.
We live really rural and my husband made the two hour trip into town and visited...
Is the nest on an elevated surface? Is there a way you can relocate her with the nest to the ground? If so, I’d do that so the chick can come and go to and from her and introduce it to water and food. The chicks can live off of the yolk for 48-72 hours, but things will start to get bad quick if...
Thanks so much! I can’t wait to hear some peeping. I just want to make sure I don’t set them up for any problems by them lacking other nutrients in the feed, or there being too much of anything that will affect their kidneys, etc.
Have a wonderful day!
Thanks so much. I just keep them on grower/finisher and provide free-choice oyster shells. :) I thought it might be ok to feed the same grower/finisher to the baby chicks because it is 20% protein, but I figured it’s better to ask some fellow chicken tenders before proceeding. Thanks again...
Hi all. We will have one of our hens hatching her first clutch any day now.
Unfortunately, non of our feed stores have organic chick starter crumble in stock. I’m wondering if I can allow them to each the grower/finisher that we feed all of our other chickens.
We never switched to layer feed...
Hi there, and I’m SO, SO sorry for my delay in getting back you. :(
I did purchase the peepers, and I put them on several of our girls. I HATED doing it, but I didn’t have any other choice. I think I had 8 girls that had the peepers on at one point. If someone pulled a feather out of another...
I missed your comment earlier because I was responding to another forum member.
This is the run. Yes, both coop and run are 10’x15’. I’ve been rotating chickens in and out of the isolation space/brooder. It’s just so crazy here. I’ve been trying to get this under control, but I feel like I’m...
Yeah, my run is winterized. This topic wasn’t about the picking problem. My question was about the Pinless Peepers and whether or not they can cause frostbite issue due to condensation build up around the beak/facial area.
My apologies for not understanding the intricacies of forum etiquette...
I’ve read through every response and am following as much of the advice as possible. Cut back on BOSS, trying to increase protein, ordered pinless peepers, checked/ing for mites and lice, etc. I just wasn’t sure what you meant by making the run “habitable”.
I have, but I’ll check them again. These are my first chickens, but I’m assuming I would see the mites upon inspection. I’ve done searches online and read books on how to look for them. I’ve got the powder here to treat them, but I just haven’t seen any lice or mite.
The coop and run are both 150 sq ft. I don’t know what else I can do to make the run habitable. We’ve put a swing in there, tiered roosts, a xylophone. I let them out to run around when I’m cleaning out there, but with all the snow (despite the trails I have shoveled out for them) they don’t...
The peepers are on the way. In theory, our coop and run are sufficient for the amount of chickens we have in there. Coop is 150 sq ft. Run is 150 sq ft. There’s probably a total of 40 feet of roosts spread out between the coop and the run. I don’t have a problem reducing the flock size though...
You think 1 cup of BOSS amongst 14 chickens 1x/day is the problem?
The coop is 150 sq ft. The run is 150 sq ft too. Both have several roosts. Two roosts that are 10’ long in the coop. Multiple long roosts in the run too.
Thanks! I’m doing everything I can in the way of feed and ensuring they’re getting enough protein. I feel like they’re just bored, but there’s not much I can do about that... so, I’m guessing pairing the flock back is my only other option. :idunno
Yes. They’re on a 20% protein crumble and we give BOSS in the a.m. Mealworms are occasional treat. I’ve put all kinds of stuff in there to entertain them, but it’s still happening. They can’t free range because of predators and we have 2’ of snow on the ground already. Right now we’re at -16 F...
We’ve got lots of roosts, a xylaphone, tried a swing (no success), and feed a light helping of scratch mix 2x/day. I’ve done cabbage, but the runny poop makes that a minimal win. Plus, with 14 chickens, the entertainment doesn’t last very long.
Things are MUCH different in the Spring, Summer...
