My husband and I moved a few years ago up to a modest place in the forest on a mountaintop in the Cascades in southwestern Washington State, near Mt. St. Helens. We always kinda wanted to have chickens and finally, we did it! Since then, we have added dairy goats, ducks and rabbits. Thinking...

    Soap Makers Help!

Quote: Any goat milk would work fine, but some breeds have a higher fat content, so your soap would be more superfatted. I have mini nubians, and of course I think they are the best. Both breeds that go into a mini nubian (nubian and nigerian dwarf) are supposed to be "dairy" goats and...

    Egg song from a rooster?

We used to have a rooster that seemed to notice whenever a hen did the egg song. His response sounded like "Someone layed an egg!" Perhaps it has to do with fertility and flock bonding. But I think our former rooster squacked about eggs being layed, but by the hens. Our new guy doesn't seem to...

Help me pick the prettiest roo (Easter Egger)

Thank you again Illia, I believe you helped me before when I was researching the sex of these guys, you are a very helpful member of BYC. After hearing what you had to say, I think mixing them with the speckled sussex would be a VERY good idea! I'm glad because Scratch thinks the four sussex...

Help me pick the prettiest roo (Easter Egger)

Thank you Illia. I was wondering what would happen if they were crossed with my others? I understand Easter Eggers are mutts, but I wanted to still be able to have interesting colored eggs, not just brown. Everyone else lays brown or off white. I was curious what would happen when crossed with...

Help me pick the prettiest roo (Easter Egger)

Quote: Well, here is the issue....... Scratch is mating with the mature hens, not the ones his age, and crowing fine. When he crows, Uh Oh tries to join him in song and it sounds hysterical. But when Scratch mates with the hens, Uh-oh goes over and watches and tries to join THAT too, and...

Help me pick the prettiest roo (Easter Egger)

Okay, so I bought sexed pullets and a cockerel, wanting to breed some Easter Eggers. I ended up iwith THREE roos all together and now I need to pick. One went missing this morning......I'm still hoping he returns from free ranging, but I pretty much decided he doesn't have the personality to...

    Easter Egg Hunts in September?

Well they are still locked up this morning. I'm a deaf person so I don't know what-all sounds are goin' on in there! I'm gonna take a peek in a few. I'm sure the roosters are happy the girls are trapped. LOL My chickens used to like these nest boxes, but I had a duck living with them and she...

    Easter Egg Hunts in September?

Quote: I did that with my first Easter Eggers (my other chickens can't fly) and they could still fly out. But you are right, I did lose one of them to a stray that comes by here. I think the idea of keeping them locked up until they lay sounds like a good solution. Or I could let them just go...

    Easter Egg Hunts in September?

Well I've been free-ranging the chickens a lot because.....well, because of the time of year that it is, we have lots of vegetation and need to keep our feed expenses down. They return to the coop nicely at night and everything is hunkey dorey, right? WRONG! I have a mixed flock, with some older...

    Soap Makers Help!

Quote: What type of GM did you use (fresh, canned, powdered)? Was your GM liquid, slushly or frozen? When did you incorporate the lye into the GM? (before or after weighing/melting oils) Did your GM/lye solution turn color (i.e. yellow to neon orange)? What type of FO/EO did you use...

    Washingtonians

Well that was quite a jump, especially for us where rabbit pellets jumped about a month or so ago (up about five bucks a bag). We were lucky to get a great deal on hay this year (three dollars a bale ) so that helps even things out, but I need to sell of the animals that are sort of being "pets"...

    Soap Makers Help!

You can find immersion blenders at the Goodwill for about five dollars; I haven't burnt one out yet, but I have a spare. You can feel them get hot, don't push them past that point or you burn out the motor.

    Soap Makers Help!

Quote: I have an abundance of goat milk so I was going to try 100 percent for the liquid next time. I have just substituted gm for 1/2 the water in prior batches, and it came out a sort of oatmeal color.
