Did you bring them inside with the hen? I’m debating bringing them all in, but that would leave my rooster outside all by himself! I live in the southern US...I thought I explained the weather pretty well haha! It’s going to be 30-45 and raining for the next week, and then will warm up to the...
My silkie hen is hatching her babies right now. She’s had two from the last couple days, and a new one hatched this morning. The low tonight is 45, and then 30 the next two days. Will they be ok in their coop outside? It doesn’t leak (it’s raining too), but is thin wood and is not insulated. Do...
I’m cool either way! My kids are the ones who love the chickens. I’m just their caretaker haha! I don’t want drama though, and want the chickens to be happy.
It’s 2 silkie hens, 1 silkie rooster, and 2 Easter Egger rooster. The Easter Egger seems “nicer” to me, but I have no idea what will happen when they start mating etc. The Easter Egger also has a quieter crow than the silkie...but I’m sure that could change too haha!
I’d like to keep the flock small. I don’t have that big of a yard, and the coop holds 4-6....but comfortably 4 imo. One of these roosters was always a mystery (a silkie) but the other was promised to me to be a pullet :/ I guess I could keep 1 rooster, and look for another hen. So then I’d have 3:1?
I have three 4 month old chicks that have been together since birth, and 1 hen that’s 1.5 years old. If I rehome both roosters, my 4 month old hen is going to lose her two buddies. They go everywhere together! Should I keep one rooster? Or will that be to the detriment of my two hens in the long...
I have 3 chicks, they are 5 weeks and 3 days old. It’s been very warm here (I live in Texas) with lows in the 80’s. My chicks slept outside in their coop for the first time last night and they did great! Now the forecast is showing lows of 70-71 at night for the next week (days will be in the...
Oh, I’m just tired of the dust from powders haha. I’ve been using DE in their dust bath to treat for the last couple of weeks (obviously it’s not working) and am tired of powder being everywhere.
Both of my silkie hens have lice. What is the easiest way to treat? I definitely don’t want any powders, and want to use either a spray or pour-on. I’ve read that silkies can have this problem ongoing, so I thought maybe I could get both treatments and alternate if they get it again? I live in a...
Ok, thank you! I’ve been changing it up each day, with sav-a-chick, acv, or plain water. The sav-a-chick package says to provide a plain water alternative, but there’s not really enough room in their box for that, so I just do a whole day with plain water instead.
Normal? I’ve checked the temp, and it’s 95 on one end and 80 on the other (I live in the south and my house is set to 78 degrees). They’ll be a week old in a couple days...should I go ahead and reduce the temp to 90 now? They do tend to sleep on the warm side too, so that’s why I haven’t reduced it.
Thanks!! So the dirt from my house should be safe to use? I was going to gather it from a drier area of the yard vs a shady/muddy one...I thought maybe less chance of parasites then.
I have 1 week old baby chicks, and wanted to provide them a dust bath area. Is it ok to add food grade DE to it? I have some ash, and sandy dirt from our yard also. I like the idea of DE, but also worry about respiratory effects of the dust for the chicks...and my family, since the chicks are in...
