They do go in when its raining or snowing but other than that they prefer to perch outside. It was in the single digits last night and I thought they'd choose to go in but nope...they didn't want to be disturbed tonight either. Someone needs to explain to them that its winter! Guess they'll know...

I disagree. The chickens adapt to their environment the best they can.if with all of your years of chicken experience you choose to ignore others its up to you. Good luck getting a chicken to pull out its wallet.

There have been some great suggestions given. As a chicken keeper I provide 3-4 square feet of floor space. I believe floor space is what is referred to when this rule is used, not cubic feet, and most chicken keeps on this site will agree. If trying to fit 17 in, it is more like a boxed roost...
