Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Hatch update: four of the five eggs that went into lockdown hatched. Sadly one chick was born with curled feet and...no eyes. I've seen some weird stuff but this takes the cake. Pretty creepy. It was so sad cause the little thing really wanted to live. What a set of lungs and a strong little dude. But couldn't walk..couldn't see and I put it down. So I'm left with 3 healthy chicks. Two are a pretty yellow with blue undertones and one is rust colored. Different then what I've had so that's cool. This brings my SFH count up to 7. Fingers crossed these are pullets!!

This may be of interest...

and here.

Should have said that the deficiency mentioned above would be in the PARENT(s) of the chick...the producer of the eggs. This is the effect of that deficiency in the egg that was produced since the chick has never eaten anything yet.

Too bad we feed a predominantly grain/legume based feed in America. It's the main reason we need a "premix" (or "mineral supplement") in our feeds...because of the anti-nutrients in the legumes firstly and the grains secondarily, it creates a need for additional mineral supplementation. (And of course that supplementation is made in a lab somewhere rather than them being able to get it from real food sources.)

Okay...I'll get off my soapbox now.

Thanks for the info! And preach away about nutrition..love that topic. These were purchased eggs so out of my hands in this case. But good stuff to know for my own flock.

So here are my new Swedish Flowers. I don't know anything about them right now as I have never had them. I have about 40 other breeds, so I will read all your posts and learn about them. They sure are cute!

bulldogma and ki4got,

Thanks for the offer of the eggs. I'm not going to take you up on that right now, but will definately consider it in the future.
At this point in time I am keeping the girls in the coop most of the time, allowing them out for a few hours in the afternoon. I do need to consider a secure run for my birds, at this point I live in a heavily wooded area, and they wander off into the woods in search of bugs, etc. I know that there are raccoons and foxes around.

I'll be heading south for a few days the end of July/beginning of August, maybe I can arrange to pick up some hatching eggs on my way back.

well, I've got plenty of cockerels too, so consider that maybe...

here's a pic I took yesterday of Momma and her brood. yes, they are ALL hers now, since the other momma quit. and she is FIERCE about protecting them.
SFH and bantam cochins

eta: I didn't manage to get them ALL in the pic. LOL but this is most of them.

looks like the first is possibly a pullet but the second is a crested cockerel.
