Broody 7 months old in November??

Yes. So I suppose I have't allowed them to get broody because I keep taking them away. Not a good time of year. However a few days later my count at night showed I was missing a hen. The next a.m. (minus 30 with -40 windchill) I went looking for my hencicle. Found blood and feathers and...

Broody 7 months old in November??

I have a few GLW's and one is acting strange. Since its been cold and my flower beds are done I've been letting them free range. One morning I went to let them out to find a hen had been out all night. (I bess do a better head count at night). She roams around distraught and different then...

Can we possibly have blackhead AGAIN?

Thanks so much. I do try to keep it as natural as possible whever I can. I just can't let this turkey go and would rather not deworm several times a year but until he is healthy and gone and all the rest are healthy I feel mostly in the dark about what to do next.

Can we possibly have blackhead AGAIN?

I delighted to say that after 4 days of giving him Colodial Silver, which brought him to eating again and normal stool I gave him Metronidazole for four days and he is now eating, pooping, chirping and strutting. I am so delighted! My questions are: Should I now give him dewormer? How soon...

    Natural Remedies Against Mites?

I wonder if DE would help mites or VermX? From what I recall its a strong orange oil that keeps them off.

Hope This Saves A Turkey From Blackhead

Not at all. I've learned, and so have my toms, the hard way. I lost one and am on round two of fighting for anothers life. Consider yourself educated and lucky. Beautiful birds aren't they! I love those darn turkeys. Seems I cannot raise them hear again though.

Also a good article I think. First paragraph talks about the head ... http://www.nwtf.org/conservation/bulletins/bulletin_25.pdf

Hope This Saves A Turkey From Blackhead

Post #19 shows the beak I was concerned about but is normal and the dark to pale color of the head if their mood is light there is nearly no red at all. Does that look like yours at all? https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=2498694

Hope This Saves A Turkey From Blackhead

A while back I was concerned that mine were ill because of their beaks and feet turning black. Turns out its part of them maturing. Are they young or full grown? I have read on a few sites that the "black head" doesn't always occur until death which in my experience would be days/weeks after...

Hope This Saves A Turkey From Blackhead

The Metronidazole is for the protozoa which must be treated first and is found, around here at least, in specialty fish stores. Do they have the other characteristics I mentioned? Hopefully someone else will come along and advise you on the Sulfamethazine.

Hope This Saves A Turkey From Blackhead

I'd never actually seen their heads turning black except for the natural blackening around their beaks but did notice them go pale. The tell tail for me was the sluggish, lethargic, depressed and bright sulpher colored poop. And loads of drinking.

Can we possibly have blackhead AGAIN?

Thank you so much everyone. I have a bit of an update. This a.m. the turkey is eating which I haven't seen him do in 4 days. And he's chirping. I did however find what I"m sure was a long worm hanging from the perch among all the slim and green runny poo. When I picked it up it was kind...

I've bought the bag of red pepper flakes and they gobble them up. Hopefully that is what will work!

Hope This Saves A Turkey From Blackhead

I cannot find large quantities of cayanne in my town nor in the neighbouring MAJOR city. I have not tried a health food store though. All I can get is a very small very expensive bottle of it at the grocery stores. I don't suppose chili powder would work would it??

Can we possibly have blackhead AGAIN?

...for five days, 10 days later safeguard, 14 days later safeguard again. I thought I read it could be from 10 - 15 days later. Should the de-wormer last several months in warding off worms. I *think* at this point I'm dealing with the protozoa in the turkey right?? Not the actual worm ... yet.

Can we possibly have blackhead AGAIN?

In July I treated my turkeys with FishZole and then dewormed my entire flock (chickens and two turkeys) with Safeguard. As of yesterday my Tom is feeling unwell. Started out with runny poo and this a.m. under his roost is a LOT of mucusy yellow "stuff". Almost looks like an egg burst open...

Ideas on what to transport them in?

I've been terribly irresponsible and left this for the 11th hour. It occured to me tonight that I have no idea who to get my Tom, 2 roos and a hen to a friends to become dinner. Dh has a little dodge with a roll top tonneau cover. Is it cruel to put them in there, close the tonneau and...

    Do roosters require companionship?

Thank you so much. He can hear them all where he is. Hopefully it will only be until the peacock chicks are sorted out. In November I'll bring him (SLW) my only SLW hen. Hopefully they'll make beautiful babies. Charlie sounds like a wonderful addition to a family!

    Do roosters require companionship?

My father and I have split our flock. I had too many roosters so I gave him one for future needs! Problem is he has a very happy block right now with two roosters that are doing well together. He also has another pen with pheasants and peacocks. Currently he's got the rooster in an old pen...

    Decisions desisions for fall

I was afraid you would say that. That would be two points against the same beautiful rooster. The underdog. One decision down two more roosters to choose from. There are currently three SLW roosters and I *think* one isn't crowing YET. Maybe he'll be the lucky boy.
