I have merriams but I do not know how well this years hatch is going to be due to they free range at our ranch and I do not always find the nests. I am getting some new blood in the flock for it is much needed. I have 9 toms and 12 hens, for now, we have preditors that like them as much as I...
I think I did it all wrong. Started with 12 shipped fert. eggs and had 7 to lockdown. (not bad) Hatched 4 on their own day 27 and 28, assisted one ( which is not doing well), two late ones. Cannot get the moisture high even with two wet sponges added at lockdown ( max 67%) is that the...
OK thanks I did just put some slurry of chick started in his mouth and he swallowed. The cup I tried was too large and will have to find something that supports him upright with his feet just touching the ground. Very frustrating! I really need this chick to survive for the genetic diversity...
it has been 48 hours since an assisted hatch of a turkey egg I bought online. It was "shrink wrapped" to the internal membrane but only assisted by removing some of the egg shell and moistening the membrane with h2O. Chick came out on it's own. I thought had the 'flop on the back' syndrome...
Oh we do feed them daily. Laying rations, cracked corn, wheat(they love), with millet and sunflower seeds. They eat really well. I was afraid someone was going to say it is a habit that is taught to others. My husband said to get rid of the birds and start anew. I do not know if I have the...
I have a flock of about 15, 6 toms and 9 hens. Mostly Rio Grande/Merriam and Beltsville White. I caught one hen several weeks ago running around with an egg in her mouth and now all the hens are raiding nest and carrying eggs. What is going on? Help! I do not have a nest that has not been...
Nice hen is she wild? Rio Grande maybe? she may have a dietary issue. What are you feeding her? I give my turkeys whatever they want from the kitchen. They love cheese, pasta and most of all grapes. Cottage cheese may help with the calcium and egg shells. My hens may lay up to 17 eggs in...
Not sure where you live but I do have some toms you may be interested in. They are Rio Grande x Merriam cross. They have more of the Merriam plumage, ie: white trimmed tail feathers. I have some pictures but I do not know how to put them on this page. I could PM you the pics. I am in Colorado.
Still looking for a tom. If anyone out there knows of a breeder or just someone who has Merriam Turkeys I would appreciate some info and maybe get some fert. eggs or poults from them. Thanks.
Hay Colorado, I know this is coming at an unusual time of the year but I just lost my Merriam tom turkey the other day to old age. He has been running himself ragged after the younger group of hen I have and it finally got to him. Well I am in need of another one now. If anyone out there in...
My flock does venture a bit from the home front, but we live in a very rural area with no neighbors. Now that it is winter they rarely leave the front door of the house. Did you know turkeys love grapes? Mine are nuts for them.
What I know of turkeys they would prefer free range. Is that not an option? Where in WY do you live and what kind of turkeys do you have? I live in CO but am closer to WY. I have a nice group of 12 birds, three Beltsville white, one Merriam tom and 8 Rio Grandes.
