Colorado

Me neither, and I DO think of them - and the natives - from time to time. Donner Pass, too. And the chickens who came with the pioneers? I've got some wind damage to attend to today, from last night's winds. Being deaf, I don't hear any of what's going on outside, and sometimes when I look out in the morning after a high wind, I find my world ever so slightly rearranged, almost to my surprise. Yep, I wonder how those old wagons managed to stay upright,

We had quite a mess of pots and stuff strewn all about this am...had to go rescue our trash from littering the open space this am...oh joys.

The wind here is up a bit, but nowhere near what it was leading up to and during the storm. I was pleasantly surprised at the temps when I went out to feed the chickens as I expected 20s last night but I don't think it went much below freezing if it even made it there. Right now it's over 40 out. Even being deaf, I would imagine that you can feel the pressure changes inside the home as the windows and doors push in and out because of the wind. I "think" that I can... I'm not sure as I'm not deaf, but can feel my ears pop and feel the house "move" with the wind and the change in air pressure. Not movement like an earth quake (what fun!). <--yeah, I'm a little "off".

I understand that your off, but I get it! :p our house has been a rocking a bit in the gusts......

Power was off for about 6 hours. We had the wind, boy did we ever. It is back down to its 60 mph range. Lost one small tree at the top of a ridge. I have no idea how strong they were, 100+..... Coop is fine and all is well, yay!

MAN is it ever windy right now. I can see what looks like falling snow over the mountains. We are sitting at 32 right now.

The wind tore the metal roofing/snow shelter loose in the run. It is to windy to do anything to fix it right now so it will have to wait for Sunday. My only day off will be spent redoing the snow shelter.... goodie.

I may be able to use bailing wire to tie it to the rafters as reinforcement for the few screws I can reach to put in. Going to be an adventure for sure. I will look at doing some additional framing under it to help tie it down.
The run simply was not designed for a roof due to low hanging lines going to the neighbors house. Such a bummer that it did not hold up.

Sounds like lots of us are getting along well through the wind and only minor damage so far.

A while back DH asked me how Loveland got its name and if it was settled back in the wagon days. I told him of course it was settled then. Some poor soul traveling west stopped here and said "I am not going over THOSE mountains I will love this land right here."
(I know I am wrong but makes sense anyway to me lol)

The wind today in Denver has been pretty ferocious, but not like 100+ mph! My girls don't seem particularly bothered, and they've been unfazed by the wind. The worst thing that's happened is that Kukie, my Lemon Cuckoo English Orpington had what I think must have been Marek's, and she died this morning. I had wrapped her warmly earlier and put her in the sun, but I knew she wouldn't make it through the day. I've read that people "cull" a sick bird immediately, and perhaps I should have done something to end things for her. But last night I brought her inside, wrapped her warmly, and just stroked her for about an hour. She was so much more peaceful, and I'm glad I had this chance to just be with this little one of God's creatures. The other birds all seem fine, although her good friend Schocki, my English Chocolate Orpington, seems a bit lost and is avoiding the other birds.

Hindsight's 20/20, but do any of you have suggestions for what I should have done when I noticed her extreme weight loss about 10 days ago? I really don't want to lose any more of my babies.

Hay Colorado, I know this is coming at an unusual time of the year but I just lost my Merriam tom turkey the other day to old age. He has been running himself ragged after the younger group of hen I have and it finally got to him. Well I am in need of another one now. If anyone out there in Colorado county or nearby states has one I would be greatly appreciate knowing about him and if he was for sale. I would be willing to trade for a hen or just purchase outright. Brace for it, I think winter is here! Thanks all.

I am so glad the wind finally stopped. To my surprise, the plastic didn't come off the main pen! I had only wrapped the north side completely, the half the west and east sides. I want to put the pen extension on the south side, so that's why I haven't gotten it wrapped yet. I was really dreading that wasn't a good idea when the winds got even worse yesterday, but by some stroke of luck nothing went pear shaped. I hope this weekend is a lot calmer so everyone will leave the coop and pen for awhile. I have a lot of cleaning to do in there.

Sigh..... The winds yesterday and the fact that I have 14 laying pullets has confirmed it for me.

I have a human egg thief getting into the coop.

I got 2 eggs Monday, 1 on Tuesday and 9 yesterday. Today only 2 again. Time for new locks and more security.

Perhaps NOW cameras can be added to the budget.

Last week was similar with the weekend being good production. I need them eggs for my customers and for my family dang it.
If my dogs would not harass the chickens to death I would build their run all the way around the chicken coop and run.

I am very glad the wind is gone. I have to work Saturday so hubby will have to help fix the coop up some.

We always prepare for the things that want to eat the chickens like raccoon, hawk and the like but tend to forget the nature of some people. Makes me mad that my hens were put at risk.

Sorry to hear about that kind of thing. It really agrivates me to no end.
I have some cameras around my place for security. They are dlink units and are wireless. They hook to my wireless internet and broadcast to a secure site for free. you can set them up to send you a message on your phone if there is a loud noise or motion. You download their app to your phone. Then you can check the camera in real time and see what is going on. They are relatively easy to set up and are somewhat cheap. This may be what you need. I really hate it when there are two legged thiefs around. More than likely someone you know also.
i found them on amazon for the best price. I Hope this helps.
As an added bonus. You can check on your house and critters when you go on vacation also. Depending on where the cameras are. You will need electric to plug them in. This is where my solar system comes in very handy. The coop is powered by solar.

Wow, how many eggs do you think your thief is taking per day? My mixed flocks of pullets and hens (maybe 30 total) are still giving me around a dozen per day, more than I can eat for sure. What do you think your thief is doing with 6 or 8 eggs a day? Do you think (s)he is taking them all, and you are getting what's laid afterwards? That's rotten. Do you think your thief is hungry - or just likes eggs? I just don't get it, it is a Mystery to me.

I am still in shell shock after yesterday's winds. I have to re tarp two of my hoop coops (got one done today), am thinking of the other. My birds act like nothing happened, couldn't wait for me to get the nest boxes back in order to lay more eggs. They are happy, and, of course, that leaves me happy, too.
