The wrong birds are eating the chicken feed

That makes a lot of sense! It's not a pop door, its a larger door that swings but I can close it most of the way and try that! Thanks,I'll see how it goes.

    Hen crying wolf for attention!

Yep! Spoiled. I started chasing her off my deck flapping a half open umbrella (mimicking territorial wing flapping - in my mind at least) lol. They mostly stay in the yard now :)

The wrong birds are eating the chicken feed

Our hens are in a large free range yard and have free access to their laying ration. They forage for bugs most of the day. Problem is, hundreds of small birds from everywhere fly in and eat the chicken feed all day long. They are fat and numerous. Every evening I refill the feeder because the...

What treat did your chickies get today?

Kids didn't finish their hamburgers, so the chickens had those! Theyre also working on the pears that fell from the tree and didn't get picked up..

Hi all! I'm in Metchosin. I have 5 hens, great layers. We had a cougar on property recently but the hen house was secure! Awesome. I know nothing about the bylaws, but the homeowner had chickens here before, and neighbours have lots too??

What treat did your chickies get today?

I just throw it right on the ground or directly into the compost pile. They eat bugs. A little dirt is fine!

    Can't Catch/Grab My Ameraucana--Help!!!!

sounds like a teenager to me!! When she's fertile she may submit to you, but for now she's all "you're not my mom!" Amd "none of my friends mom make them go in the coop" and not doing homework and whatevs. It may pass! Try tossing treats into the coop instead of picking her up...

    How to stop egg eating

Don't de beak your birds!! There are things you can do to deter egg eating! I just had success detering my hen. Chickens are creatures of habit, you can break the habit in a few ways. You could install roll-away nesting boxes so the chickens don't have access to it. You could increase their...

Getting creative to deter egg eating! Suggestions ?

I haven't had any breeds other than this one. I'm fairly new to raising chickens (1 year) so haven't had any other experience, but I really find my flock to be delightful. The eggeating stopped completely after I started leaving food in their coop for the early morning. They've never been...

Getting creative to deter egg eating! Suggestions ?

Wow, thanks for the information Mary. These are things I did not know. I do use later pellets, 16%. I'll pick up oyster shells today. I did not know they live shorter lives! That's terrible. I wish I had known that in advance. We give them a lot of kitchen scraps, which they love. Do you think...
