If washing eggs the water should be hot not cool. Cool water can cause bacteria to seep into the egg through the pores. Think contraction of the egg contents drawing in whatever is on the outside vs expansion with hot water preventing seeping.

I also used wood strips and J clips. The J clips take special pliers and don't work on anything smaller than 1/2" hardware cloth but are so very worth it.
I used zip ties to hold things together while I went back with the clips.

I would keep the dishes in their pens. You will feed less wildlife that way.
Spreading it on the ground would waste a lot AND still feed unwanted wildlife.

It could have been any number of things that took your boy down.
While calcium build up in birds not needing it CAN kill them it takes a long time of over consuming it.
Calcium for the flock is best put in a separate container...
Yes hens can crow...however...It is generally when they are old and stopped laying.
Can you add a picture or two of your crower?

I would suggest using a good quality outdoor paint with a semi-gloss finish. It may take 2 coats but is worth it in sealing the walls.
Mine has been holding up well even after 10+ years.
