    Turkey Talk for 2014

I know I'm new here but I also wanted to say I'm sorry that your hen didn't make it. I was so impressed by the detailed response you got to your plea for help from the wonderful people on this board. Again, I am sorry you and your hen went through so much.

    Turkey Talk for 2014

This is my first post in the Turkey section as we are going to give it a try this year for the first time. We are going to raise some for meat (thinking of getting 12 and hoping for 8 to process) and are thinking about starting with BBW. We have raised Cornish X for meat purpose about 70 each...

    Poop Hammock Rocks!!

Worth a try I guess. I originated this thread and STILL love my poop hammock! I am glad that others have found it useful - it is probably one of the favorite things we did in the coop!

Sneaky processing- need plan from experienced folks

I think it would be easy to hide what you are doing but I would not wait on gutting the birds after killing - you risk illness for your family with a tainted meat. It is a pretty quick process of killing, bleeding out, gutting and then skinning or plucking - good luck!.

CHICKEN SWAPS OF NH SWAP LISTINGS

I also bought from NHNANNA who sold the birds to me as sex unknown. She also told me that there was no real way to know 100% for sure so it was very up front that there was uncertainty. I agree she was very sweet but I feel that to me she was completely up front and I would buy from her again.

    Meaties on hardware cloth?

So we have done a tractor approach to raising our cornish but hubby was thinking of making a pen area that is raised with hardware cloth as the floor. The idea would be to be able to rake out the poop and have them basically live on the hardware cloth. Is this possible? Practical? My thought...

Dots on Comb?? PICS posted - thoughts?? Thank you!

Thank you I looked up Fowl Pox and it is possible we are def. in mosquito territory! I will watch them and see I guess. Hope if it is Fowl Pox that it stays the dry kind and not the wet - yuck! Anybody else have any thoughts on this for me? Wish I could change the title to say I have...

Dots on Comb?? PICS posted - thoughts?? Thank you!

It has recently dropped in temperature here and I first noticed dark dots on one of my 6 month old hens comb yesterday. She has the largest floppiest comb. Today I noticed several of my hens have these dark dots on their combs. They don't brush off or move so am I correct to think they are...

Cornish X - how do they get those chicks??

Thank you for all the responses - I have been educated a lot today! Love the story of the Cornish roo that escaped freezer camp for a while! Ours will be heading to camp this weekend as the nights are getting really cold for these guys and their growth rate is def. slowing down from it. I...

    Where do you order

I have had great success with Sclechts hatchery and the price is the best I have seen! They have shipped a few extra in each group I have ordered (only done this twice) and we only lost one in the first few days after their arrival so I am very happy with that as they had to travel all the way...

    triple yolks?

One of my smallest chickens (the white leghorn) has been routinely laying double yolked eggs and she will still lay the next day. She will lay 5 or 6 days a week - amazing! These things are huge and I really feel bad for her! The other day her bottom was bloody but I think one day I will...

Cornish X - how do they get those chicks??

I had read that on other threads that you cannot mate your own but it still left me baffled - lol - but what you say makes sense I guess. It amazes me how they can figure out what they will end up with in the end - gotta love genetics - dominate gene, right?

Post here if you DON'T wash clean-looking eggs

I was wondering about this as my mother asked me when I gave her our first give away dozen "am I supposed to wash these or did you?" I had not but I wasn't really sure if I SHOULD before giving them away or selling them to friends. I knew about the bloom but still not sure about the safety of...

Cornish X - how do they get those chicks??

I have a co-worker who keeps asking me how the hatcheries get Cornish X chicks if the birds don't live long enough to actually make chicks the old fashioned way. I honestly have no idea how this works - do any of you know? If they die from their own superfast growth before sexual maturity how...

    Age for slaughtering dual-purpose birds?

We are processing some dual purpose Buff Orpingtons this weekend that are 19 1/2 weeks. I'm curious to see what they dress out at. We processed Cornish X at 8 weeks and our largest dressed at just under 7 lbs - mmm, mmmm, good! lol These BO's might be 3 1/2 dressed if we are lucky. Good...

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

First egg yesterday from my 19 week leghorn. I was really surprised that today she presented me with another! So exciting! We will cook tomorrow and am hoping that maybe I will have a 3rd so that the three of us will each get an egg to ourselves as a "first".

Acting hungry - are they getting ready to lay?

I have my breeds listed in my sig line - a variety of sorts - think the RIR's may lay first or the White Plymouth Rock? Whoever lays I probably won't know but I just want to make sure they have what they need to thrive

Acting hungry - are they getting ready to lay?

I like the idea of mixing the feed - and thank you for your responses. I feel like I am seeing some different behavior and am thinking that these gals are going through a change of sorts - Will an egg show up soon??? I sure do hope so!! I went out today and bought another bag of grower...

Acting hungry - are they getting ready to lay?

hmmm I was wondering if that could be the problem - the bag says at 18 weeks to change them over. As fate would have it and the timing of one bag ending I didn't want to buy 50 lbs of feed for a week so I just got the layer. Might buy one more bag of grower finisher. Do they act different...
