I am thinking that the bird who layed this egg stopped laying for a while now and is laying again. She is a red hen mind you, but egg looks pale in color. It is quite large with a obviously weak shell. Any thoughts on this strange looking egg would be welcome.
We have a bird who is at least a year and a half to almost two years old, and she no longer lays eggs for 4-5 months. I was wondering if she could have a parasite that did this or some disease that caused this problem? She still eats and pecks around. Appears to be happy doing her little thing...
We called the vet today, and he said that he recommended making sure they have lots of calcium in their diet to prevent the eyp--if that was the cause. What did I learn from this: Don't let your birds gorge on treats. If they do, and there is not enough calcium in their diet, they will suffer...
I had to have a favorite bird, Sweet Pea, euthanized today. She was our lone survivor of several attacks on our original flock, and quite the little character. It was so sad. We miss her cute little presence and her sweet little sounds. She had a distended belly and was not eating for the past...
I agree with you chickonthehill, that it is a poor design. I usually don't feel too strongly about a product, but this one was a real disappointment. As I have mentioned in another posting, we contacted the designer of the product, and not only was he rude, he was not too smart, because anybody...
I agree 100% also. It was a waste of money. It came apart when it was filled. It is a dangerous way to put power in it, as it easily leaks, and the electrical connection is right there...so eventually one is asking for a shock. We even contacted the guy who made it, and he was very rude on the...
We have three hens, with one from our original flock, and three that we purchased as companions for her so she would not be lonely. Our original flock was raised by us, and very friendly. After three animal attacks, only one bird was left from that flock, and she acted differently as a...
So sorry for your loss. To be sure the bear WILL BE BACK. The bear sees it as an easy meal, and what bear will turn that down? I hope the game warden is able to actually help you with this problem. I feel bad for anyone losing their babies, as we have had that happen, and know the feeling. It's...
I'm sorry to hear of your loss. It sounds like a raccoon indeed. We had one crawl over the top and into the coop, kill one bird and eat her outside, then crawled back out. Our girls were spoofed--particularly one. Then one day a coyote or pack more likely killed off all but one bird..in the...
I am so sorry to hear about your loss. It could be any of the wild animals--even a badger/weasel that would do that (coyotes, foxes....) dig a hole and get in. We once had a raccoon crawl up the top of the roof, find the open area, killed our sweet little Micro, ran back up and out before...

So sorry for your loss! When we lost our flock one day, we contacted animal control thinking it was the neighbors dogs. They said the same thing--whatever you decide to do, you keep it to yourself. Don't go reporting anything, because they have to do their job as well--which may seem...
I would look for paw prints as well. We saw the paw prints, and saw scat on the ground after our birds were killed. One has to be like a forensics investigator looking for clues--or calling cards with those critters.
I am so sorry for your loss of your pets. It really hurts when they get killed by other animals. We had experienced a similar situation not too long ago, and it was devastating. People here do understand the pain of losing their babies..which they are to us. They are not just chickens, they are...
