I've got some eggs coming into day 3 of incubation and I've just had to return the incubator on after the powerboard tripped. From when I last saw the incubator turned on to discovering it off the maximum time it could have been off is 3.5 hours. Temperature was at about 24C. Do I have to be...
I wouldn't worry too much about laying yet, they are supposed to start laying between 7 and 9 months old so if they are 5 months old like Mitty they have plenty of time. Keep an eye out for longer, 'stringy' bits of feathers in their crests and pointy tail feathers.
My two silkie hens aren't...
I just wanted to congratulate you on doing such a good job with him, he's a lucky boy.
I too have a Silkie roo with a crossed beak, though Nuggets isn't as bad as Mitty's.
Nug's a little bit different to the other chickens as well, but not to the same extent. He gets around as well as the other...
I also have a Cochin (LF) who is a real lap chicken and super friendly, I've had her since she was a day old. Only one out of 4 who wasn't a roo.
I do have a Salmon Faverolles who was about 5 months old when I got her and wasn't hand raised. She now can barely wait for me to sit down now before...
I have a nice, eclectic mix of breeds in two flocks. Part of the fun of chicken keeping for me is having such diverse breeds.
Flock one:
Silkies x3,, including a Roo
Hyline
Araucana
Maran
Bantam Australorp
Dorking
Flock two:
Cochin (Large)
Salmon Faverolles x2
Barbu D'Uccle x2
Barbu D'Anver x1...
Thank you 😀 it's probably a difficult question to answer online. I'm very fond of them, they're lovely chickens. My dad likens them to loyal dogs that follow you around everywhere. Shirley is a lap chook too. She likes to sit on my lap a d talk to me while I stroke her.
Hi all,
I was wondering if there was anyone here who could tell me if it would be worth taking these two Salmon Faverolles hens to a show? I've never been before and was planning to go to open days and other shows this year to learn more but everything has been cancelled due to Covid of course...
It probably doesn't qualify as crazy but her face cracks me up. Here's Laverne my dinosaur/guardian gnome hybrid who along with her sister Shirley has a weird obsession with staring me straight in the eye.
Thank you. I suspected the chances of it being a roo increased significantly after this weekend- I love frizzles and almost got myself a frizzle pullet but got screwed over and missed out on her. Bugger. And I recently gave my only other polish who was definately a girl away to a relative too...
I have this 5 month old frizzle polish who I kept because up until now I was certain it was a she. There were definate boys in the hatch who were obviously male at such a young age that I felt confident keeping her back. Now I'm not so sure. No crowing yet obviously but can anyone tell if it...
I'm not much help, I live in Australia but just came across this post on Reddit for anybody who can help. An egg farm in Bode, Iowa is shutting down. They are currently giving the hens away. Any not gone by the weekend will be killed. Address given as 1721 130th street Bode, Iowa 50519.

I only have two and have never had any before these guys, I got them last August. It's Autumn here and the days are short so they're on a break from laying but from memory when they were at their peak I got about 8-10 eggs a week from both of them. Mine also aren't broody birds. One has gone...
My new Pekin hen, haven't got a name for her yet and Cora, my truly little Pekin girl. She's still tiny, she's perfectly healthy otherwise so I think she's just a bit of a runt. Packs a mighty personality in such a tiny body though and bosses the bigger babies around.
