We only have four hens, but our BR is the sweetest of the bunch. I agree, you'll get lots of different responses. If you stay away from flighty birds (Leghorns are great for lots of white eggs, but don't care for people most of the time) you should be ok. Even then you can wind up with a very...
We have a minivan (AKA swagger wagon) and an economy car. I'm not sure if we're doing a U-haul. We were hoping to do the POD thing for most of our stuff. This is a hard move - we've done it before getting me here, but I only had an apartment full of crap. Thank God we won't have to go...

Fish almost never make it. I learned that lesson the hard way with a salt tank and it wasn't that long a distance. I have avoided starting a tank again with even a goldfish because I don't want to have to worry about that.
I was LMAO about the egg song! Good stuff

You're right about this. I don't know how bad they would be, the kennel was their home at one point. I remember when I brought them to the yard for the first time they were terrified to come out. Ahh, the pullet days... Very good points about getting them acclimated though. Thank you!

Thank you. I will do that. Good to know and it makes a lot of sense.
We have three dogs as well. I'm not so worried about them for some reason. The oldest dog has moved a short distance once but handles most things well. One of the younger ones will follow his lead. The third...
Wow, that was fast - thank you!
Hillbilly hen, that is one of the reasons we're waiting until spring. The area we're moving to gets a lot of snow and we want to be settled before we have to winter in! Thank you, I will look for her.
cluckcluck42 I agree! Now, if we had 12 I would be...
I hope this is the right place to post this.
I have a VERY small flock (4 hens) and we consider them to be pets with benefits. I don't want to leave them behind. I'm sure this will sound foolish to some people (which is fine - I am used to being a bit of a fool), but I am very attached to my...
Mine hated yogurt the first four or five times I offered it. Then one day they ate it. Now they fight over it.
I wouldn't worry about it too much, and they're still young. I don't think mine cared for it much until they were closer to 3 months old.
They picked the perfect time to start laying - last week, right before the recall started. Our BR and SLW started laying first, one of our EE's started today. I am so freakin' excited.
For some reason I thought EE's matured later. I have to say I am surprised that one is laying already, but...

These were all hatchery stock. My other is green legged also with a different comb - can't tell what kind but it looks a lot more like a rose comb. She looks like she's going to have muffs.
I got excited for a few minutes thinking I got a surprise. I still did, just not the one I...

Oh boo!! I really wanted a beardy chicken! She's pretty though. Thanks for the explaination (and the reminder) - for some stupid reason I thought she may have one or the other. Don't know why I didn't consider "neither" as an option.
Ok, looking again here I take it back. I don't think she's a welsummer. Her legs are wrong (green and not yellow) and so is her comb (looks like a pea comb maybe?).
Why doesn't she have a beard or muffs? Do they just come in really late?
I have four birds, two of which were supposed to be EE's. I am about 75% convinced one of them is a Welsummer. It has no beard and no muffs and the color patter appears to be right. Anyone ever have this happen before? Or is it possible I still have an EE that has the Welsummer's coloring?
I am so sorry for your loss! I have been following your wonderful story for quite some time now. Thank you so much for sharing the gift of Miracle with us! We are mourning along with you.
If you can go somewhere local and get chicks you might consider that as a good option. We were told to get more than we wanted (which was 4) so we picked up 6 from a farm and tack shop. I chose birds that I noticed as active and by the food or water. All of them lived.
Good luck.
..."NO!" and "BAD DOG!"
I had the dogs first - Zorro is 11, and Dooley is 4. I've not only been a crappy chicken owner, but a bad dog owner, too. *sigh*
We had our dogs first as well. We never expected that they would be able to "get along" - I really made the mistake of underestimating...

Everyone (who survived) looks OK save that they're missing feathers. There were no wounds thank God. I am concerned about my BR girl - I think she may have a broken toe. Her legs felt fine but she won't stand for any length of time. I guess I need to post in the injuries forum and...
