Speckled Sussex Pullet vs cockerel 10 weeks

Hi all, I bought two speckled Sussex chicks that are now 10 weeks old. They look different so one must be a cockerel. Any idea which one? The one with the shorter tail has greenish feathers but rounded neck feathers. The one with the longer tail has brown feathers and pointier neck feathers...

    Barred Plymouth Rock - cockerel?

My daughter was definitely part of the problem. The hens were hers before they were his and she likes to handle them and he was not happy about that. He started to randomly run at her and I understood that he was being territorial but then he came at me for no reason and I tried working with it...

    Barred Plymouth Rock - cockerel?

He’s so handsome! Totally different coloring. I see it now. And his comb is much bigger and tail is more upright. I was so confident I pulled a pullet out of the bin at the feed store and then when the red comb showed up, I was worried. I’ve never owned a barred rock so now I know all the...

    Barred Plymouth Rock - cockerel?

Oh wow, I’ve heard of the double barring but didn’t realize it remained into adulthood. I assumed that coloring was only present in chicks. Thank you!

    Barred Plymouth Rock - cockerel?

Oh thank god! I was thinking we were all good and then those feathers popped out and I got nervous. Glad you think she’s still a pullet. I’ll keep posting as she grows.

    Cream Brabanters

Thank you both! They sold out before I could get them but I may try for more of another one of my hens goes broody. I love their look and it sounds like they could get along just fine. I do have a separate small coop within my larger one so I could give them their own space with the silkies if...

    Barred Plymouth Rock - cockerel?

It’s a barred rock so I’m hoping she just matured early. The comb hasn’t changed much.

    Cream Brabanters

Hi all, I have a mixed flock of 13 - Orpingtons, Cochins, Silkies, a Speckled Sussex, and Barred Rock. Our local feed store has cream barbanters and I’m tempted to get 2. Would they do well with the others? The Cochins can be bullies to the silkies so I’m worried about the feathery heads and if...

    Barred Plymouth Rock - cockerel?

Ohh this is good to see! I think mine is on the same track. Really hoping she’s a she. My daughter loves her. I just had a rooster I had to rehome because he chased my kids and don’t want to deal with that again.

    Barred Plymouth Rock - cockerel?

The comb is pink but legs are gray. Hoping she’s just maturing quickly!

    Barred Plymouth Rock - cockerel?

Updated pictures with better lighting. She’s 4+ weeks now. I actually wonder if she’s a bit older as the feed store said she was over a week when I got her.

    Are these mites?

Ugh I’m so frustrated this happened. I’ve never had mites and got new chicks a few weeks ago and assume they must have come in on them. It’s like an infestation now! I cleaned everything out and ordered the permethrin as well. I’ll spray everything down once it arrives. Thanks for responding!
