Hi all,

I have a mixed flock of 13 - Orpingtons, Cochins, Silkies, a Speckled Sussex, and Barred Rock. Our local feed store has cream barbanters and I’m tempted to get 2. Would they do well with the others? The Cochins can be bullies to the silkies so I’m worried about the feathery heads and if the barbanters would be picked on. I don’t know much about the breed other than what I’ve read online. Any insight is helpful. Thanks!

Crested chickens especially have trouble when the crest covers their eyes, so they cannot see well. Brabanters should not have that problem, as their crest is supposed to stand up and not flop over their eyes.

So Brabanters might be okay in your flock. Or they might get picked on a bit because they do still look different.

I think the only way to know for sure is to try it and see.

You might consider whether to have two coops & runs, so you can split up the chickens (Cochins and Silkies in different groups, and distribute the other breeds in whichever way leads to peace in both flocks.)

I’ve had them as well as gold back when gold was still available and they were great. And they free ranged with all my other birds perfectly fine and never got picked on at all. They actually lived with several bantam Cochins in a separate coop and run and the Cochins never picked on them. And they free ranged most of the day with a fairly large mixed breed flock and again, never got picked on. And btw, the separate coop was just because of their age, I just happened to separate that batch of chicks, not because of the crests lol but yeah. They were amazing and GREAT layers.

Thank you both! They sold out before I could get them but I may try for more of another one of my hens goes broody. I love their look and it sounds like they could get along just fine. I do have a separate small coop within my larger one so I could give them their own space with the silkies if needed. I hope I can find some!

Good luck!!!! Mine held their own just fine. They had quite the personalities LOL but they weren’t bullies or mean at all either.
