    Egg allergies

I have come across a few threads on backyard chickens while doing allergy and nutrition comparisons between the chicken egg and the quail egg. My son (12 yes old) started raising quail about a year ago because he is highly allergic (anaphylactic) to chicken eggs (among other things) and we...

    Droopy heads

Thanks dk newbie. I don't think it was the feed but I've changed it either way on accident. I was feeding mantanence feed instead of layer feed without knowing it. My birds are laying great!! Not sure what the droopy head was but he stopped after a while and I put oregano in their water in case...

    Droopy heads

Anyone know what causes quail to droop their heads? This is out third one that is doing it. When the first one did it, we seperated him and put oregano drops in his and the entire coop's water supply hoping it was just a virus that we could stop from spreading. He was fine after two days he was...

    Need quail housing advice

Hi! We're back! After a summer of traveling, we will be collecting our birds from our dear friends who have been taking care of them. I have 120 eggs ordered from Robby at James Marie Farms. (Great guy, btw, full of helpful information and always going above and beyond to help!). So here's...

    Bumble foot???

The ratio is 8:1 so he should be happy. I'm not sure why he was aggressive yesterday. He's not like that typically. I guess I'll have to take him out today if he's still like that. Will the hens take to a new roo?

Male or Female Italian Coturnix Quail

What about the light birds. I have some that have almost no speckles and light yellow breasts. What do I look for to sex them? Red or black ring around the neck? Does no speckles mean it's a male regardless of how golden the breast is? I'm having a hard time sexing them by foam production.

    Bumble foot???

Thanks twocrows. I had to shut her in the nesting box away from the others. My roo was very aggressive today, chasing and plucking head feathers. Since she isn't moving much, she had a lot if feather plucked. Not sure what got him riled up. We added two more cages of birds recently and the...

    Bumble foot???

We had someone watching our quail for three days and this is what we came back to: We found a mini egg with some growth on it? And a hen layed up in the nesting area with bumble foot on both feet? First, is there anything to be alarmed about this little egg? Second, is it connected with the hurt...

    Homemade organic feed?

Ok. Mission aborted. This is what I figured all along. I thought it was more than just protein that made their diet different from chickens. Thanks for your thoughts. But are you saying I'm giving them too much protein right now?? I'm using ranchway turkey starter feed at 26% protein. From...

    Homemade organic feed?

Ok all, I'm on a mission! I need organic feed. It's a necessity for us. But it's costing me a fortune to ship bags of organic turkey starter feed in because no around me sells it. I'm paying over $70 with shipping for a 40lb. bag. (Gasp!) That's not including adding the quinoa and chia...

15 hens 8 weeks old no eggs

We have eight females (I think) and they were only laying two to three eggs daily for a couple weeks. They are just now starting to lay 4-6 eggs a day. I think it takes them a few weeks to really start laying regularly. Just my guess from what my birds are doing.

12 weeks old and we are still only getting three to five eggs from what I thought was 8 hens. I may have more Roos than I thought...

15 hens 8 weeks old no eggs

That's great jopheso! I'm new at this, but doesn't that mean as long as she's roosting in her egg, she will not lay any??? Let me know how that went. My son was cooking eggs yesterday and cracked one of our little quail eggs open to find a double yoke! Is it possible for two birds to hatch...

How many hens do I have?

Thanks cotquail! You just gave me a load of information to go through! I just turned their light off so that they were getting 13 hours. I might should turn it back on for a couple more hours. I live in south Florida so it is quite warm here right now- 70 at night, up to 90 in the day but...

How many hens do I have?

Yes, they are jumbo coturnix. So when should I expect them to be fully matureso I can tell how many are laying. The reason I ask is becaus they used to be very docile and they have become quite finicky in the last week or so. I have seen one if my Roos breeding them but I'm not sure what's...

How many hens do I have?

I'm kind of confused. Looking at the marking on my ten coturnix quail, it seems that I have right hens and two Roos. They started laying a couple of weeks ago, in consistant of coarse. Two weeks into now, we typically get 3 or 4 eggs a day. One day, we got 6 eggs, so I know I have six laying...

    Chickens with other pets

I once had a rooster that made best friend with a BIG bull that lived in my backyard. He slept on his back. Then again, if we left the patio door open, he would also sit in front if the tv with the dog and watch for hours. Maybe it depends in the bird? That was the funniest rooster!
