The tissue was impossible to push back in...would not stay for even 1 second. This morning she seemed in good spirits and would cheap to me calmly but her entire bottom was angry red and she looked swollen all over...the red bottom was about a 5" diameter around the vent.
We decided this...
Spoke to a vet over the phone as she is located 1.5 hours away and she said it was most likely the stomach of the chicken? Tried to poke it back in and not even close...gave her another bath / soak today and put more prepH and antibiotic ointment on...just cant tell if she is in pain or not?
Thank you all...I have no idea if that is the vent or not...I keep thinking it is possibly the lining / I guess large intestine? None of the pics online look like her bottom...it is so purple / black? No idea how long she has been this way either but I would guess 2 days although I do not see...
Wow, it has really shrunk in the last 15 minutes when I went back to take the pictures...Hmm...should I be poking all that back up inside her?
And no, we do not have any vets that work on chickens in our area...none listed online and the 4 I called all said no.
Trying to decide if we should...
Noticed one of our chickens tonight with a terrible looking bottom.
She had a big glob of poop, blood and something black...took her in and soaked her in warm water with Epsom Salts and washed away as much stuff as possible...determined there is an egg, completely outside her body inside a...
If you have the planter located where the plants will not freeze you have several options the chicks will love...Mint, Lavender, Rosemary, Oregano, etc. Check out the Fresh Eggs Daily blog as she is a strong proponent for herb utilization.
We have a Polish also...the kids just love her and named her "Einstein" because her brain is so large! LOL!
Good luck with the babies, we are sure enjoying ours.
We have 24 chicks and I have been giving them treats everyday for the last 10 days or so and calling Chick, chick, chick when I have the treats (mealworms about 1 tbsp) and about 7 or 8 of the 24 come running now but the others, not so much. About half our flock seems pretty shy and we have...
I put my girls in the coop and run last Saturday, 7/4 at 4 1/2 weeks old and they are doing well. We are having to put them in the coop each night but last night 9 of the 24 were already there so hopefully they will get it. We have a mix in the coop, some already using the roost bars and some...
X2.
You can us the medicated food no problem, just beware that you are essentially no longer lowering the risk of cocci. Of course clean, dry brooder and you probably won't have anything to worry about.
X2
There are also some drawbacks to providing a light at night and not letting the chickens go through a natural yearly cycle of molting and reduction in egg production.
Agreed, I think you have everything and the heat location and temperature info is good info. Also check into water temp when you fill your container...most of the info points to using water about on the middle setting of your faucet the first couple of weeks as cold water can chill them...
That is a bad Spring...
I built a tractor for some friends and around the edges I put framed hardware cloth on hinges...basically move the tractor out, drop the edges and stake them in. Prevents digging and so far nothing has pulled up the big metal stakes holding the perimeter down.
Excellent advice and very clear and concise to follow...thank you.
Do you "coop train" or basically lock them in the coop for the first 24-72 hours when transitioning from brooder to coop? I have read many places to do that and I had planned to do that but from reading above my...
...I checked on them multiple times in the night and you could easily gauge how warm they were vs the change in night time lows with as much as 10* the first week we had our girls. Some nights piled under the heater, some night several inches around the heater but not directly under it...looked...
