    Advice wanted, rooster placement (ish).

I was just concerned bc my alpha rooster killed a very nice cockerel I had coming along. Surprised me. With 20-some-odd hens at the time I thiught there were enough for both of them. Guess I thought wrong.

Hen shaking head, expelling discharge from nostrils, sounds raspy. Farm supply said culling is my only option. Please help

I believe this means you cannot sell or give away any birds from your property, ever. You cannot go to bird shows. You need to keep a closed flock. You can purchase day-old chicks from a hatchery but once they are exposed to your property they too can become sick and/or become carriers.

How best to integrate hen into new young flock?

I would put her in first and add the young ones following a couple weeks of see-no-touch. ETA good luck with them!

    Somebody crowed this morning

I'm the odd one out. I think your cock-a-doodle-doodler is the silver bird, dead center in the first picture, facing the camera. A lot of comb showing, IMO. But I could be wrong. 🤷🏽‍♀️

    Advice wanted, rooster placement (ish).

This does sound like a lovely solution for Fred. This is the only thing that worried me a little: Will this put him in contact with the other roosters? Will it put his flock in with the general population? I would think this would work best if Fred and his flock stayed separate from the...

Granny's gone and done it again

Wow. Our highs are still in the high 70's, low 80's! Our lows are in the high 40's, low 50's. But we may get some much-needed rain Monday and Tuesday.

How do you decide, @troyer, when it's time to replace a rooster?

Granny's gone and done it again

I'm afraid Rojo, my rooster, might kill him. He's killed a cockerel before. I know I'm going to have to dispatch Rojo at some point for this to work, for the Am cockerel to take over the flock. Rojo is at LEAST four years old, maybe five and has chronic bumblefoot. He's a real dear, but ... it's...

Granny's gone and done it again

I'll have to cull these BA cockerels before the end of the month, I'm thinking. Since I'm off to NM the firstish of November. At four months, will my baby cockerel be in danger from Rojo? He was pecking at them pretty good today at snack time, and that's new ...

Granny's gone and done it again

Last week when I wore my nice black church slacks to church, by the time I got to church I was covered in dog hair! So today I wore a pair of shorts to church and changed into my good slacks when I got there. Am keeping the slacks in a plastic bag. Sent two dogs this week to PetSmart just to be...

Getting rid of roosters follow up!

You can order just female chicks from a hatchery. Much cheaper than ordering laying pullets! We've always had very good luck getting what we order. We do usually order some males and some females though, to avoid the "small order fee." We don't usually need 15 baby pullets! The males go in the...
