I have a 4-week-old kitten who has not defecated since I got him 2 days ago. He doesn't seem sick or anything and is acting like a normal kitten should: active, playful, feeds on his milk 3-4 times a day, and takes naps when he should. I don't see him uncomfortable or anything... So I'm not sure...
My poor baby got attacked by a raccoon and I have many worries about her, so I'm hoping that you guys could help me.
So this hen is about two or three years old, and she was broody so she was in her nest, warming her eggs.
In the middle of the night, my mother started hearing our chickens...
Vetryx Poultry Aid is a good one. You can use it in their waters so they can drink it, or you could just use it directly on the chicken.
Another one is Verm-X Pellets Health Supplement are pellets your chickens can eat.
You could find both of these on amazon. Although, last time I checked, the...
If the rooster is mating with the hens, I'm pretty sure one of them will get broody pretty soon. Just leave some eggs in their nest. By the way, beautiful chickens!
I don't have any experience with Silkies either, but I think they would sleep on the roost.
How old are the chicks?
When I had chicks without a mother, I would put them in a box and cover them with a blanket. Don't worry about them suffocating, though, because it's never happened. I would only...
Is she a new layer? How old is she?
Hens are very picky when it comes to choosing a spot to lay eggs. Sometimes all of your hens lay eggs in the nest you prepared them. Then there's that one hen who just won't lay her eggs in the nest and will lay it someplace else.
It has happened to me that...
Where do you keep your ducks? Where do they sleep? How did the raccoon get into their coop (if you keep them in one)? Did you leave the coop door open or leave the entrance open?
One thing's for sure, the raccoon will come back for more. They always do. It's good that you cleaned the wounds...
I agree with everybody else, the production red is a pullet. I'm not sure about the blue cochin, but it's most likely a cockerel. There's a chance it could be a pullet... I'm not 100% sure.
It's most likely a predator. Maybe a raptor flew by?
Next time it happens, look to the sky to see if there's a bird flying by. If there isn't any, look around the place and see if you find some fox or raccoon (if you have any where you live.)
What I do is I cut the feathers on one wing only. That way, they don't have the balance to hop over the fence.
But don't cut too deep into the feathers. Look at this picture.
I'm not sure if it loaded... but that's where you should cut the feathers at. You can do it with any good scissors...
Barnevelders do usually take longer than other chickens to lay eggs. But not that long... I'm not sure what's wrong. Are you sure she's not hiding her eggs anyplace else in the run? Try checking around for an egg if you haven't already.
Does she have enough light around? Because hens need at...
The laying on her side and lifting her wing in the sun is normal. They always do that when they're in the sun. You don't have to worry about tan lines or anything. They don't worry about it either. Plus, they have feathers to protect their skin.
Predators have come and taken my animals many times, but they have never done what you just described. You just posted you live in Goergia, and I live in Florida so we have many of the same predators.
For sure, it wasn't a raptor. They usually swoop down, grab them, and fly away. And if your...
Welcome to BYC!:welcomeAnd congratulations on your marriage!
I do suggest you get a couple more chicks than you plan on getting. Most of the time, something happens to one of the chicks. I hate when it happens but it just does. :hitso yeah, it's best to get at least six chicks.
It is best to...
:welcomeI hope you enjoy your time here at BackYard Chickens!
I also think the best thing to do is ask your neighbors to take care of them. Do your ducks like to attack other people? Because if they don't, then I don't think there would be any problem with your an amputee coming to help and...
