It sounds as if you are feeding them correctly. Do they get a chance to forage at all? Is it possible they are picking because there is not enough space?
How often would you want to do this? Our waterer is doing really well at staying nice. We wash it out and spray off anything that looks wrong, but we have not had to use soap or bleach. We don't use ACV or white vinegar either. Maybe our plastic is resistant to growth? We have well water, so...

We lived in Tucson and had chickens. While I was worried about them in the heat, they seemed to do very well. We had two very big trees in the yard, though, and no misters. I think it helped to have places where the ground was moist that they could lay down and cool themselves.
