    Wheaten Maran cross question

I lost my Wheatens to hawks so my plan was to restock one of my coops with Wheaten Marans this summer but found nothing locally and resorted to hatching eggs online which arrived dirty and some with what looked like green powdery mold on them. Ended up hatching only one out of 9 that ends up a...

What is the best netting to put over the chicken run?

This is a different netting that was crazy expensive but shows how I strung it up and supported

What is the best netting to put over the chicken run?

Eventually fenced and netted all of my birds due to losing up to 25 per year to hawks. Netting can get pricey especially if it's marketed as "hawk" netting. This holds up well.

Keeping Flies out of the coop

I live in a valley in TN with 1000s of acres of cattle so maybe the flies are occupied with them. We get stink bug swarms, asian beetle lady bugs, june bugs, and boxelders, and the chickens won't eat any of them.

Keeping Flies out of the coop

I've never had a problem with flies, but I do not put food and water inside the coop. EVER. I add new pine every other weekend or so and throw in a handful of scratch so the chickens will turn it all over. As long as the poop stays dry, the pine and poop breaks down and will compost. I also...

    Nest boxes

When you have several boxes but you see three birds crammed into one box laying on top of each other, you realize they pick a spot a lay regardless. It will not bother them.

    Nesting box timeline

I build at same time but cover opening with cardboard until 20 weeks. Then I open and add wooden eggs. Prevents them from learning to sleep in the boxes.

    Chickens panting in coop

When I lived in Louisiana, I had to go back and add 4x8 sheets of foam insulation from Lowes in the ceiling below the roofing, as it radiated a ton of heat. The next coop I built I used the Poly roof panels and they were much cooler. You can't have too much ventilation.

    Ventilation on new coop.

Awesome looking coop! You're a hell of a carpenter. I've built five now and every time I've added more ventilation. I am in Tennessee, but the coops get surprisingly warm inside. The most resent one I built has large windows with hardware cloth and window panels with roofing metal that hinge up...

    Chicken with no butt!

That does help clear up the breed. I had a coop damaged in a storm and lost some chicks. The chicks that survived were moved into another coop. There were Lavender Orpingtons in that coop and it appears two were survivors. These are the Sapphire Gems and Sapphire Splash.

    Chicken with no butt!

Picked up some Saphire Gems from Rural King from Hoover Hatchery 11 weeks ago. They were supposed to be all pullets, which this one does not appear to be. He is the oddest shape and built more like a dinosaur than a chicken. He's got no butt! The others all have more of a traditional shape as...

    Tractor Supply crap shoot

Bought Production Reds, Gold Sex Links, ISA Browns, and EE's. All are 8 weeks old. All were supposed to be sexed and pullets. As usual a few seem to be turning into boys and one of those doesn't look like any of the 4 types I bought. What is #1 ?? Looks Roo but what is he? The pics below...

    Brinsea Mini Advanced II Humidity?

Yes I have same one. I bought a small round quarter size humistat at the pet store and stuck it to the inside of the dome. Works fine. If anything the humidity gets a little high at the end if you follow their directions. Especially after the first chick hatches. For the first 15 days or so you...

So I have a broody sitting on eggs.....any advice?

It's amazing, but chickens have been figuring out how to do this for a long time all on their own. They get up and eat and drink once or twice a day and really don't need any special attention. You do have to pick up eggs regularly out of any other egg boxes, because they will get up to eat and...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Hatched a couple Wheaten Maran girls from some eggs I bought online. They are four weeks old. Have 6 in the incubator all looking good that are due to hatch Thursday. Finishing up a new coop and fencing in a separate run to keep my other flock separated. Hope I do get a rooster out of the six.
