My husband collected eggs last night and took them from a broody hen. She was 2 weeks into the time period.
I just noticed this morning 12 hours later. Wondering if they are still alive? Fortunately, they weren't put in the refrigerator.
Unfortunately, the Stratch and Peck feed didn't work for my turkeys. Because it is a mash, there was a lot of waste. I find that whole grain, feeds seem to only be mash. This just doesn't seem to work for my poultry.
I would settle for an organic pellet feed, but an coming up empty....
If I...
I am raising turkeys to harvest for meat, so I want to be feeding organic.
I can't find organic turkey feed ANYWHERE. Anyone have any good sources for organic feed?
I could mix my own grain, but this is a last resort as I do not have access to all the vitamins and minerals that are likely...
My incubators has been perfectly set until last night. Actually, I just figured out it was the thermometer and my error of putting it on a papertowel which was absorbing water and giving it a false read.
Anyways, I have been slightly increasing the temp since last night, (so probably working up...
Yep. It's plain old kitchen cayenne pepper. I buy it by the pound in the bulk foods department at the grocery store. I add it to the turkey's food daily and they do just fine. I have week old turkey chicks and have started adding a small amount to their food as well, to get them used to the...
It's a brinsea eco20.
The eggs are actually turkey eggs, so bigger than chicken. The two that are out appear to be healthy and normal (thankfully!!!) And 2 more have started pipping.
The first two are almost dry, so should I attempt to take out the dividers now or wait until they are dry and put...
Help! 2 questions.
My chicks are hatching a day earlier than I expected. Should I be worried?
Also, I forgot to take out the rail dividers in the incubator (I could just smack myself). One row has the dividers right up on the eggs (less that 1/8" wiggle room), the other tow rows have 1/4-1/2"...
I have 3 different thermometers in my incubator and they all read a different temp.
1 hygrometer reading 98.8, one home digital hermometer read 99 (doesn't do decimals) and a glass old style one reading just over 100.
Last year I used only the glass one (assumed it would be the most accurate)...
I would love to be self sufficient with regard to my animals feed.
This book is an EXCELLENT source for such ideas.

Based on ideas here and lots of research, I did calculate, mix and feed a 100% grain recipe to...
Sorry, I do not have a picture. Wish I would have thought to take one. They are yellowy/orange and are subtly covered with red veins.
I will try to find a pictue online
Here is a posting that has the things I am referring to, just scroll down to the 3rd picture...
We have 'harvested' a few of our hens. Upon opening then up, they had what I would call orange/yellow large marble sized balls inside them. They were not attached to anything, just inside.
Are these normal? What are they?
Thanks so much for those links!! The peanuts, though not regularly feed, probably are too fatty.
I do have that book, however it is organized unusually and I have had a difficult time wading through as I created my recipe.
I will check out those others as well. Any thoughts are greatly...
Thank you very much! Terrific points that I hadn't considered.
With regard to 'animal protein', this refers to meats, bugs and such, correct? I am aware chickens are carnivores and have actually worried if there are enough bugs available to them. This may well be exactly what is going on!
Thanks for the links! I have been able to rule out moldy or rancid. I had almost 100 chickens and went through grain very quickly, so even if I fed moldy feed (which I have never seen and did pay close attention for) it would have been short term before a new bag of a given grain was opened and...
