The chicks were 12 weeks old in this photo which was taken in the first week of August. They love getting treats of bugs and grass, and the occasional scraps from the kitchen, but they are getting most of their nutrition from their starter/grower crumbles. We were still using their little...

    My new watering system!

I'm in San Diego - haven't gone through a winter with the system yet, but I don't think it will be a problem. Knock on wood...

    My new watering system!

I did something similar. I used a decommissioned homebrew bottling bucket because it already had a hole drilled in the side, just above the bottom where any sediment would collect. It has a snug fitting lid with a small hole in the top to prevent a vacuum. I have a hose nearby so it's easy to...

    pumpkins??

Ours munched heartily. We kept the seeds for ourselves, but the rest of the guts went into the run - all gone now. After reading the other posts here - I guess I'll crack open the jack-o-lanterns and put them in next...

Black Soldier Fly Larva - BioPod

I first discovered BSF when our compost pile got too wet. This was before we got our chickens Since then a friend of ours has made a BSF container that's pretty similar to the basic bucket design but not quite so intricate. He just stacked 2 buckets, and the inner bucket had a bunch of tiny...

It's a work in progress....but this is what I have so far! (More pics)

That's beautiful. I agree with cajun Rabbit - the couch is gonna be a tough sell for any visitors you get. I think all that's missing is a hammock so you can hang out and watch chicken TV

Free shipping boxes, do they really exist??

Sometimes I cruise craigslist for several weeks when I'm looking for something. I've definitely seen big shipping crates listed there, but they're not very common.

    Are your May babies laying?

I don't know exactly when they hatched, but I think they were about 2 weeks old when we got them in the middle of May. We have 2 barred rocks, 1 RIR and 1 black star. We got our first egg (yay!) on 9/30 and we've been getting 1 sometimes 2 most days since then. I don't know which ones are...

What treat did your chickies get today?

It was a slow day for treats today... some melon rind and dandelion greens in the morning and a little scratch tonight. It varies so much from day to day depending on what's cooking... But last Sunday when I cleaned up my hop plants I found 3 gigantic grasshoppers that needed to find a new...

    Water in coop

I keep food and water inside the coop as well as the run, but I only have 4 and they're not in the coop too much. I do keep the water elevated on blocks so they don't kick as much shavings in. I change it daily, but it doesn't get too bad... they've never knocked it over or anything like that.

< 1 week in with 30 chicks and the kids love it!

Holy cow - way to jump in... those chicks are pretty cute. I'm a city kid too - but my grandparents had a farm that I had lots of good times on. No farm for me - just the 4 hens in the city. Welcome from San Diego.

Hey guys and gals from South La!

Hi Chris - when I saw your topic said 'South La', my southern California brain thought LA Congrats on the new property and the chickens - that's quite a flock you have. Enjoy and Welcome from San Diego.

    A newbie without a clue

Quote: I'll second this. Our space is too small for a walk in coop, but I made one whole side of the raised hen house part a big door for easy cleaning. I also wound up with (can't say I actually planned it this way) the hatch to the nest boxes being wide enough that I can slide the poop...

    Brooder box question

Quote: My mom was certain that chickens are far too dumb to learn to use the nipples. She happened to be visiting when my order arrived. I made a quick water bottle from a 1 liter jug with the nipple in the lid. It was not 30 seconds before the first curious girl came over and pecked at it...

Dumb question: did i get too much straw?

It's also really good for mulch if you keep a garden. And for that purpose it doesn't matter if it gets a little moldy. Helps to keep the weeds down and the water in. We use pine shavings in the coop and the run is just dirt. I'm thinking I might put a layer of straw down in the run during...
