Worms - not mealies, but garden worms

For the mealies, I got them a year ago from Amy Knolls on through her site (she is a member) The Reg Wigglers I ended up going through UncleJims. It was more than I wanted to spend, but they ship out every Monday (if they get the order by the Saturday before) and they were delivered on...

Worms - not mealies, but garden worms

That is a good point I forgot about, I'll have to think about that. Then again I plan on using a scoop of garden dirt to get the worm farm going. Do parasitic worms live long outside a host?

Worms - not mealies, but garden worms

I was thinking about doing some worm collecting myself, just am too eager to get started :) It has low in the teen here still, so I think it'll be a while until I can find the worms on the surface. Why oh why didn't I think about starting it in the fall. Do you just collect a lot of the worms...

Worms - not mealies, but garden worms

Yup, did a lot of research, red wigglers are the way to go. I was hoping someone had some experience from ordering them from somewhere different than just a google search.

Worms - not mealies, but garden worms

I was planning on getting them from Uncle Jim's but I only need 2000, and it looks like it is an additional $12 just for shipping if I don't order 5000 worms. So far no luck finding any local ones on craigslist. I have tubs ready to go, just need to get the worms in there and toss in some scraps.

Worms - not mealies, but garden worms

Thanks, I thought of that, but I think that would be an expensive way to get started. I found some online for 1000worms for 30bucks, but wondered if there was any better pricing than that. If anyone has bought any would like some real reviews, hate to spend that cash then get a bunch of tiny...

Worms - not mealies, but garden worms

I've been breeding mealworms for about a year now, but wanted to try a regular worm farm. Some for chickens to eat, but mainly for composting and getting castings for growing veggies, which will make their way to the chickens. Does anyone know anyone that sells worms? I know there is a list...

    New Year's Day Massacer!!!

Ugh, what state are you in? I like the idea of free ranging, but I'm in PA, and I know I have hawks, owls, and foxes in the area, well i've seen them or gotten a pic of them in the past years. Thankfully not right near the house, but until I got chickens they wouldn't have a reason to. They...

    Frozen water bowls

All spring, summer, and fall I've been happy with my water setup. Just a 5G bucket that I drilled 4 holes in the bottom and screwed in some water nipples. Once I knew it was getting cold I put in a 50W submersible bird bath heater inside the bucket. I wanted the water liquid, but not warm...

    Mealworm farming

How hot did you let them get? There is a time period where you will see no new worms then BAM thousands of them. Just make sure you don't mess to much with the substrate during that time. That's what I've noticed at least.

    Mealworm farming

Are rainbow mealworms just a company that sells them? I bought my thousand from Amy that sells them on here. Thankfully I didn't notice any mass die off, there were some here and there, but not enough to worry about. It is amazing how quickly they grow in the summer vs the winter when I...

    Mealworm farming

Are you sure they are mutant beetles, sometimes it just takes them a little while to fully morph/dry out. A lot of that has to do with the humidity. Too much and they'll rot like the issue gaitngirl had, and not enough and they'll dry out and not look like perfect beetles right away. I...

    Mealworm farming

QUESTION: How quick is your second generation eating the wheat bran? I started with 1000. The other week I finally sifted through them (as I posted already) and I went away for vacation last week. I had put some hefty pieces of squash in there, when I came back not only was all the squash...

    Mealworm farming

In February I ordered 1000 meal worms. I originally had them in 4 containers, but one had oat bran as a test and they didn't seem to like to dig in so I split them up and moved them into the other 3. they went from worms to pupae to beetles and I seemed to have plenty wheat bran, but a few...

Egg Time ? Fake Egg Trick ?

Egg number two is irregular. Not terrible, I think it is from one of the amberlinks. It had been laying with the redsexlink yesterday. It looks like it is supposed to be a brown egg, but very faded. So happy to have 2 days in a row.

Egg Time ? Fake Egg Trick ?

Thanks for the info. 21% laying pellets so far, with occasional scratch and veggie scraps. So I got some and checked the box, two of them here in there, no eggs. I said heck with it and went into the house to get an easter egg. I went back out to put the egg in there and found this egg...

Egg Time ? Fake Egg Trick ?

I bought 6 chicks from TSC on March 6th. Redsexlinks, Amberlinks, and Leghorns. The Amberlinks were the smallest, maybe only a couple days old while the other could have been a week old maybe. I can't wait to get my first egg(s) They have a coop with a run attached to it, they only have...

    Mealworm farming

Finally got to see what everone was talking about. I've had beetles for a while so I figured I'd shift through the bran with my fingers. Then the bran started to move on its own :) Very tiny still, but i can clearly see them. Now to see how long it takes them to grow up.
