I thought I had ordered Welsummers, but this pullet doesn't quite look like the others. What do you all think?
Here is a pullet that I know is a Welsummer

I currently have 40 hens. I sell eggs to alot of neighbor ladies and my hens get the job done. I also free range as well and that cuts back on feed costs. I love my hens so doing chores isn't something I dread. Starting off, I would start small and see how you like it. If your coop and can hold...
My husband knew that when we got married I wanted chickens. He built me a chicken coop and 3 years later I have 40 hens and a decent egg selling business to the local neighbors. I know that he does not enjoy my birds the way I do, but he puts up with them. He certainly doesn't go out of his way...
Yes! Chickens love all sorts of different food! Lettuce is always a hit as well of any type of meat. Always make sure you have an actual chicken feed available to them at free choice, but table scraps are always a welcomed treat to many chickens. Mine know that the white bucket that I use for my...
agreed. I have always just thrown my table scraps to my birds. No matter what it is. I figured if they don't like it, it will decompose eventually. They love meat scraps and I do have a couple hens that are pretty darn good mousers. they always have layer feed available, so the scraps are not...
I do exact same thing at the school i work at as well! they waste so much food scraps! i ended up just taking a scrap bucket to work with me and then have them dump their leftover food in it when they are done. my chickens love it! my girls are disappointed on the weekends when i don't have...
I have only hens and I have seen some of the more dominant hens mount the lower ranked hens. I'm not sure what the reasoning is behind it, but yes, I have definitely seen hens mount other hens.
It does look like a bruise. But on both wings though? There is no odor and I have yet to see any mites. The temperature really hasn't gotten that cold yet. I'm not sure what it is. It doesn't seem to be affecting her much, as in, she doesn't seem like she's in any discomfort rather than losing...
I noticed my hen is missing many feathers. I have checked for lice and mites many times on several occasions and have yet to spot one bug on her. I spray my coop with a permethrin based solution whenever I clean it. I do not have any roosters. Is she just that low on the pecking order that the...
Yeah, there is no reason why you can't eat a fertilized egg. There really isn't a difference. And as Cindy said, just put the roosters on craigslist. I wouldn't ask a price since its hard enough to give them away. Here on the ranch, the best solution is a sharp axe.
Agreed. I keep my hens in a run while I am away, then when I am home I let them out to free range. When it gets darker, they all head back to the coop and I shut them up at night. That way they lay a majority of their eggs in the morning while they're in the run and I can find their eggs and...
