I had a coworker that had this happen. One of his 1 year old hens was attacked by an unknown animal which tore into her left side. In the process her left ovary was damaged. Apparently the left ovary is dominant in chickens (human utilize both as an egg is releaseed from one or the other...
Glad you get to keep the menagerie! But, I have to take this off topic for a moment... What model Plymouth do you have? I have a 50 Special Deluxe that is 65% done. Those old cars are heavy, hope you have a good towing kit on that Suburban!
I raised African Greys when I was younger. They are very intelligent and inquisitive birds. Mine were never loud. But then again, I had a Blue and Gold Macaw to drown them out. Rehoming is very stressful to parrots. Cockatoos and African Greys are tow of the ones I have dealt with that do...
Blue, I think you hit the nail on the head. I too had no idea how beautiful some chicken breeds were until I saw real show quality chickens. Hatchery stock is good for people who want a backyard flock for eggs but I wouldn't ever breed them. If you do want to stick with some of your hatchery...

A splash to a self blue will get you black.
I don't believe you will get a black. I believe you will get lavender split blues. Not sure though, I am certainly no expert. I agree with Jody. Trying to breed to a BBS group would be too messy.
Well that could be your experiment. If you cross it with a black and it is a slpash then you would get a blue. If it is a lavender you would get a black. The top photos looks like the ones I saw last night. The feathering on them just wasn't nearly as pretty as yours.
My gut reaction that it was due to chick size. Now, I do not have much experience with bantams but I was expecting the little guy to be smaller. The egg was appropriately sized but the chick is not much smaller than the standards I hatched. That plus the fact that it was only one foot makes...
I have seen a few posts on here about orps being born with or developing crooked toes. I recently hatched out a bantam orp with the same issue. I did as other members have done and splinted the foot. I also prophylactically splinted the unaffected foot. I have given vitamins as well. So far...
That is a good looking dog. Looks very similar to my chow mix Maddie except my dog has long hair. Personally, even though all odds are pointing to him being abandoned, I would take him into the vet/shelter just to see if he is chipped. He sounds like he is well behaved, somebody must have...

I you think Google Earth is scary, you should check out Google Street View. I stumbled upon this today. With the photos they have on the site you can see into my garage! Luckily a lot of people on here live out in the country and they won't be affected. I can't believe they did this...
Where are you getting your shavings? Yes, ones from the pet store are very expensive. I buy mine at the farm supply. The shavings are marketed for horses and cost $5 for 5 cu ft compressed.
I just had one hatch this morning that I felt was talking forever. I was getting nervous but I was able to restrain myself from interviening. As they say a watched pot never boils and the little chick must have gotten a second wind. It ended up hatching about 30 hrs after the initial pip.
Bantams require much less space than standards. According to VSU it is 1sf inside and 4sf outside. So your 16sf+ is sufficient. Plus, free ranging should satify their need for more exploration.
