There is also heat produced from the composting process that goes on in the deep litter method. I have used it for 10 years now- with some VERY wet springs. The moisture is handled well by the deep litter. I think the benefits of deep litter make it the best option.
Its been awhile since I have been on here! 25 Silver Laced Wyandottes arrived yesterday and 3 Barnevelder Hens arrived today. We had to rehome our whole flock last May after tornados destroyed our farm. So, we are rebuilding!
When we raised these, we never had an issue with flying. They get heavy fast! So long as predators can't get to them, the biggest challenge was keeping them moving.
I haven't ever raised meat birds full on pasture, but we did let them out to free range with the other chickens and they did fine. However, we did raised the standard cornish rock for a county fair project once. These birds ate so much that they would fall asleep in the feeder and wake up and...

We had this problem, as well, that is why we moved the water out of the coop into the run. The run is enclosed and attached to the coop so the chickens can access it even if I haven't let them out to free range.
How great! My husband goes out the the coop and starts naming the chickens "Chicken Salad" "Chicken pot pie" and so on whenever they fall behind on the laying. Seems to work, we always get a jump in production!
I would think they might have been latched on when she hopped away and then wound up outside the box. However, it sound like Mama is taking care of them. Congrats on the new bunnies
We have used Ivermectin on both goats and lambs. However, our vet said not to use the pour on as it is fat soluable and doesn't act fast enough to work for goats and sheep. We use the injectable and give it as a drench- 1cc/100lbs. Some DE in the bedding areas will help with the mites as...
