Horrible news.
I went to see Eagley this morning and his new solo coop wasn’t right. Somebody had closed the ramp door, so he couldn’t get into his run, and when I went around the back I found the big door we use for cleaning had been unlocked and opened.
Eagley was nowhere to be found.
I...
Ah this is hopeful! Thank you!
It totally makes sense that he won’t have been shaping it as usual - I hadn’t thought of that. Definitely not going to mess with it at all unless it begins to impede him in any significant way.
I used to have a budgie who needed regular shapings with a dremel due...
Absolutely. His wife is the compassionate bird lover, but she’s away at the moment so I’m seeing a different side to the husband.
She was really angry when she found out what had happened!
She and I had a chat, and Eagley is now locked away in his own private coop + run within the larger...
So, there was a bit of an incident with Eagley. Some idiot cut his beak because they decided he was “too aggressive”! They didn’t even ask me!
I made a thread about it here.
Thankfully he’s on the mend and still a total sweetheart for the people who treat him with respect.
A little update on Eagley’s beak situation.
It’s now healed over and seems to be bothering him a bit less. He’s still struggling with some foods and is grooming himself less, but he seems more himself.
A tricky thing is it seems to be regrowing now, but only at the sides! You can see it in...
Thank you so much for all your advice! I’ll look into the silver asap. I have a bird rescue formula called ‘guardian Angel’ that I use with parrots so I’ve dosed him with that so far.
I’m a bit heartbroken that it won’t grow back 😢. His number 1 favourite food is red grapes and I tried to give...
We’re not in a position to move, no. I’m trying to rent or buy local land as I’m in a rural area, but it’s ludicrously difficult despite all the empty fields outside my window!
For now, neighbour’s nice wife and I have agreed that I can put him in a separate house and run on their land, and...
Not quite.
I don’t have any land. A neighbour (nearby, but not next door) keeps chickens and heard he was looking for a home and offered to have him join their flock. They’ve had roosters in the past but their older one had died.
So, he lives with them, I just visit. I have no control over who...
I get the feeling alcohol was involved.
My neighbour’s wife is the real chicken owner but she’s away right now, and this Bruce guy came over and apparently it came up in conversation, so he went out and did it. My neighbour said he didn’t particularly want him to, and his wife is really angry...
If anything I expect a random stranger coming in and butchering his face is only going to make him more frightened of unfamiliar humans!
Which is just another layer of the total stupidity of it all..
Eagley is my hand-raised rooster of mystery heritage. He’s a sweetheart with people he knows but can be territorial towards new humans.
He lives in my neighbour’s flock but he’s very much MY rooster. I visit him most days and we sit together for hours.
Yesterday I went down and was met with...
Ha! I like that and may have to steal it, if I may?
Thanks for all the input though, it’s always appreciated. Always useful and interesting to hear a range of experiences and opinions from folks in the know!
Thank you!
I think we’re just both coming from very different places, ultimately. I’ll do what I can to give Eagley his best chance there, but the rest is up to him! xx
Agree with all of this conversation - there’s a big difference IMO between a kick that forcefully kicks a bird some distance, versus using your boot like an armoured human wing to do some stern redirecting.
I fully accept that there may be birds and moments where a more firm approach is the...
...he left and vowed not to come back! And he has a bit of a go at the man who owns the hen house when he goes in to collect eggs! 😱
I was honestly *astonished* to hear this because he continues to be a total angel around me! And my daughter, and my husband! You could write songs about what a...
He’s amazing! He was a rescue and can’t be released, and now he’s as tame as any cockatiel or budgie. But sooo clever! It’s more like having a monkey than a bird 😂
I’m so with you on this! There’s a few YouTube videos of people who do this and the results are amazing!
One in particular says they’ve never met a rooster they couldn’t tame enough to keep, although some do better just kept with other boys and away from the hormonal temptations of hens, long...
That’s so interesting!
Eagley has done this for me his whole life, so it’s not really a new behaviour.
I think in his favour is the fact that he’s part of a big, multi-generational flock. Currently the older hens still keep him in line, as well as the little bantam Roo, so he knows he’s not at...
