Mostly blind hen with other issues

Just an update to say that this hen is still doing really well! It's cold, but she has a heat bulb (not light) to roost under. And yesterday, she laid her first egg since early September! It's the most beautiful green egg I've ever seen. I'm so happy she's doing well enough to lay a perfect...

    Wattle wound

You were all right! Then hen didn't even have dried blood on neck today, and I can barely tell where the wound is on her wattle. It was certainly hard to get a good look because she was scratching through bedding to get sunflower seeds so fervently. As to roosters- I have 25 hens and one very...

    Wattle wound

Thank you so much, everyone! My horse took a tumble and scraped her knees pretty badly a couple weeks ago (daily vet visits for IV antibiotics, daily bandage changes, complete rest, etc) so I think I'm pretty paranoid right now. Glad you all saved me from reeeaaally annoying my hens!

    Wattle wound

I'm stuck at work, but my husband sent me a picture showing one of our hens with blood on her neck and wattle. He thinks she cut her wattle on something (no idea what since they were in the coop/run until he let them out while home for lunch). Naturally, this happened to one of the hens that...

    pullets in molt

I'm in WI and have 5 out of 6 10-month old pullets molting. Some harder than others.

    Laying during molt

Yep, she’s your average hatchery EE. The birds free range and eat a lot of grass and burdock leaves. They nearly always have a broken pumpkin to snack on as well as whatever they want from the compost pile (lots of garden refuse) and fallen fruit in the orchard. They also get some of the duck’s...

    Corn spill

Ah well. We may have to agree to disagree on that front. While the grass does dilute their overall protein intake (accounted for by feeding a high protein crumble and giving high protein treats), the phytonutrients in grass and other forage are beneficial in their diet. My concern with the corn...

    Laying during molt

It probably has something to do with the high protein feed, but some of my hens stopped laying/started molting in late August and they haven't even started back up yet. This hen was the last to stop laying of the older girls and the first to start up again, so maybe she's just an aggressively...

    Laying during molt

@song of joy , to your point, I guess she did more of a slow molt. The back of her neck was all naked expect for pin feathers for a while, but the rest of her body has just looked rough and thinly feathered rather than going patchy like some of her sisters.

    Laying during molt

They're on a 22% protein feed and get either meal worms, rabbit meat, or cat food every day or every other day as treats, so I feel confident they're getting enough protein. I do have lights in the coop right now. A "dusk" light is on from 4-5 am and 5-5:30 PM. The brighter light comes on...

    Laying during molt

Hello! This is my first winter with chickens. Out of my 13 birds that are currently molting or just finished molting, 12 haven't laid an egg in months/weeks, but are growing in beautiful new sets of fluffy feathers. One still looks very rough and is clearly not done molting, but she has recently...

    Corn spill

Hmmmm I wouldn’t say pesticide free. It was crop dusted multiple times. But we shoveled up the corn and the birds are alive, so I guess we’ll see what egg counts are like for the next few days.

    Corn spill

Some farmers use our driveway (which turns into a field road past our property) to access their fields. Today my husband went home for lunch and saw that the farmers has spilled a large amount (estimated several hundred pounds) of feed corn on the edge of our property where the chickens free...

I'm never gonna get an egg!!!

I didn't realize EE roosters had this reputation. I have a docile EE roo and thought EE roosters might all be on the wussy side of things.

❤️Said goodbye to my two handsome babies❤️

You are so lucky to have found them new homes! We had to put our drakes down because we could not find anyone to take them. We even offered to send a few bags of feed with them....

    Bumblefoot?

Don't give up! We battled bumble in our Wyandottes (the only 3 who had bumble out of our flock of 27 chickens and 4 ducks) and after many iterations of medicating, scraping, bandaging, and making vet wrap chicken booties, I swore that we would process them if I had to treat their bumble one...

    *~*Runner Duck Club*~*

My little duck has laid 8 perfect eggs in 8 days! I'm starting to hope she takes a day off soon so she doesn't hurt herself. Maybe one of the other 3 could chip in and lay something soon :fl

How do i get ride of my Roo's and get more hens?

It's really hard to rehome roosters as other have said. I couldn't even give away (for eating or other) my male ducks. Watch Craigslist. I happened upon an ad for 19 week old RIW/RIR pullets for $7. Skeptical, I arranged to go see the pullets. It was a retired farmer who raised laying hens and...
