Yes - unfortunately one of our hens (who I think was the leader of the pecking order) died a couple weeks ago. But I haven't noticed this sound until more recently.
Hi all,
My almost 3 year old hen is making some strange meowing noise, kind of sounds like a baby crying or a cat? Not sure how to describe it but I attached a video so let me know if it works. Is this some kind of respiratory issue? What can I do for her? While I was with the chickens she was...
Normally they get Manna Pro Layer Pellets or Dumor 16% layer pellets Actually for the past week they have been eating another kind of food that my mom bought since we ran out and it was the only thing we could get on short notice. I'll call her and ask what the ingredients were, but it wasn't...
Hi everyone,
My 2.5 year old leghorn hen started molting earlier this fall and I was worried when they were taking a while to grow back since my other hens didn't really molt, but she seemed fine otherwise so I didn't worry. Her feathers did start growing back, but I guess they never fully did...
I came home to find my chicken had a cut on her beak. We have a coop and small run which is enclosed within a bigger electric fence run. I checked all the wire fencing and I didn't see any wire sticking out of the smaller run enclosure, so I'm not sure how she got injured, maybe by another...
I got an omlet coop and run for somewhere near 1k. It's definitely more than I needed to pay for a 4 chicken coop, but I wanted to worry about the young chickens themselves than figuring out how to build a coop. We are considering getting a second coop and this thread is making me think I should...
Hey everyone... my little sister found this "fairy" egg today. normal shell and egg white inside. I don't care if she never lays an egg ever again, I just want her to be healthy and I want to know what's going on.
I bought her as an ameraucana from Murray McMurray hatchery, and some people on BYC have said she's an ameraucana, and some have said she's and EE! She lays very light blue eggs. The chick picture is from a year ago today:D.What do you think and why!
Read the whole thread... I'm really proud of you! Part of having animals is knowing when to do the right thing and you did the right thing. She is at peace now and is much happier. I don't think she would have a fair chance at a healthy life and this was the kindest thing to do.
I would say it depends on the breed and how they are bred. They can live shorter than some other breeds but I'm sure with some research and monitored diet you can extend their healthy life. Meat bird breeds are bred to grow very quickly so they can be "harvested" quickly. Sometimes if they...
