Southern California Urban Coop
I received a coop as a surprise gift from my husband on Christmas morning 2007. It was a completely unexpected and very exciting present, and almost immediately afterwards I started researching chickens.
Here it is on the day I got it.
After reading up on...
I had an experience a while ago where my RIR laid 3 soft shells in one day! She had been laying hard shells for a while, and then suddenly 3 softies. I think it may have been something in her diet, but I couldn't say for sure. She laid all three in random places--one standing up on a...
My hens, who are laying so I know they are girls, do a cluck/crow thing every morning. It's not a cock-a-doodle really, but when I first heard it I worried they were boys. You might want to wait and make sure Buffy is really a rooster before you give it away.
Plus, Buffy is so cute!
I have also found that the steepness of the lamp or ladder really matters to my chickens. They also prefer a ramp with gripping slats attached. Like a ladder with a back. I think something about an open ladder freaks them out. Maybe you could try a ramp with a less steep incline?
I recently got two chicks from Agoura Feed in Agoura Hills. They are about 6 weeks old now and seem very healthy. When I was there, the only animals Agoura Feed was selling were day-old chicks, which made me feel more confident that they were disease-free. I'd call them up and see what they've...
I gave her some egg shells (baked first) this morning as well. So I think she's good with calcium. I'm more concerned about the 3 egg attempts in one day. Has anyone else had this happen? Is it common?
I have a 5 month old RIR pullet who has been laying regularly for a few weeks now. Today, she layed 3 eggs! But none were really full eggs.
First, I found a broken soft-shell egg inside the coop in the morning.
Then, when I got home from work, I found a crushed egg under her in the nesting...
I know Ideal ships small numbers of chicks as well. Have you thought about ordering pullets from one hatchery and roos from another? That would certainly help with genetic diversity.
If you read around on here, many people recommend that you never buy adult or adolescent chickens. I was like you: I wanted to have a more grown-up chicken to add to my flock, rather than raise another baby. So I got a 2 month old chick from a feed store in Bellflower. Now, she's got a...
Hey Los Angeles folks...
Is anyone looking to get one or two baby chicks who might want to share an order from My Pet Chicken with me? I want to get two babies, and I'm convinced ordering vaccinated chicks from a hatchery is the right way to go (after my bad experiences with feed store chicks)...
I'm in Los Angeles, too. In North East LA, near Eagle Rock.

Thanks for your insight speckled hen. I always have a hard time knowing how seriously to take issues with my chickens. I'm glad to have your insight, and I will consider your advice.
I guess I haven't really found many posts on "living with" Mareks. Most people talk about their chickens dying and/or having to be culled.
Could you help out a newbie and direct me to a thread that might have more insight on living with the disease? Since I have a very small backyard flock, I...

So you would just cull any bird with a possible respitory illness? I'm not sure I could do that. I'm more of a chicken as pet person.
Has anyone else had an experience with having a sick bird recover in quarantine?
Another question: One of the chickens I've had since they were chicks has a mystery illness. She's had trouble walking for over a month now and hasn't matured, but otherwise is fine (normal food & water consumption, normal poop).
Once my new chicken is done with quarantine, should I be worried...
It doesn't seem like buffchick's question about preventing Marek's from spreading ever got answered in this thread, which is too bad, because I have the same question.
I have a 17 week old RIR pullet who might have Marek's, although she's been sick for over a month and hasn't died, so maybe...
Pennie. Just wondering what happened with your wobbly chicken. Mine who started limping at about the same age as yours is still wobbly after over a month and a couple of different treatments, and I'm looking for an explination that makes sense.
I have a chicken in quarantine right now. I got her at a local feed store on Sunday and she's about 2 months old. She seems pretty healthy--lively, eating and drinking normally--but she does have a bit of crust around her nostrils and she might be a little sniffly.
I plan to quarantine her for...
