dog breeds that will not chase chickens

I know this is a really old post, but I was hoping that "Corgiscatsandchickens" might reply and give some helpful hints on how to train a Pembroke Welsh corgi not to chase chickens! We just adopted a 15 month old boy from a breeder, and the girls are terrified of him. We have a Golden and they...

Comment by 'aliprowl' in article 'Interesting Facts About Chicken Eggs'

Great information - very interesting! One quibble - my Easter Egger eggs are blue or green all the way through the shell. The interior of the egg isn't white, as you say, unless I am misunderstanding your point - " the eggs inside are the same as eggs of other colors..."

    advice on chicken roosts

Agree with the 2x4 crowd...keeps the feet warm, is more stable, doesn't require as much effort to "grip" while they sleep, and as the girls age, it's definitely easier for them. If you go with a branch, make sure it's at least big around and not some spindly little thing that is hard for them...

    Cold Chickens

I know everyone says "they're fine", but two winters ago I just couldn't stand watching them shiver any more. I now have a wall heater (flat panel) that is on all the time and frankly puts out very little heat, but they can stand in front of it and it warms them up a bit, or they can avoid it...

Yikes - is this a rooster??

I'm wondering if you guys can tell if she is a he....Easter Egger chick, and this photo is about a week old. I can haul out the camera and get something more recent if s/he's too young to tell here. I have two Easter Eggers, now six weeks old, along with two Buff Orpingtons the same age, and...

When can they have outside time?

It's gorgeous here today, and I have my 9 day old and my 18 day old chicks all outside in an ex-pen. I'm watching them, um, like a hawk (yikes) and they are having a ball. The big girls have come over to check everyone out, which is cute to watch. I've also put them in the chicken run (hens...

Chick almost drowned - recovery in peril

Chick is recovered - she made it! Eating, zipping around with the others, totally normal (though certainly a bit smaller.) Never underestimate the power of water - kept her hydrated and did dilute Polyvisol into a few of the water feedings. Very glad that this wee fighter survived.

Chick almost drowned - recovery in peril

Well, she is still with us - she does move around, walks around and I've seen her eating a bit - but she is definitely way smaller than the others and does not look robust in the least. I haven't seen her drinking on her own (not to say she isn't, but I haven't seen it) so am still giving her...

Chick almost drowned - recovery in peril

Came downstairs to discover a sopping wet, freezing cold two day old chick in the brooder. She was lying on her side, barely alive. She didn't fall into the waterer; it looks like there was a tsunami and she got the brunt of it. (I suspect a cat jumped on top of the cage, shaking it hard, and...

for those that use deep litter method...please advise me

Deep litter - YES, but I also have poop boards, which I love. Most of the poop goes on the boards (they are actually metal trays - drip pans from an auto supply store) and I clean them off every day, wiping the really icky poo spots with paper towels. A squirt of vinegar and a spot clean takes...

    BAD Rooster!

Our rooster despises my husband (I have asked him WHAT on earth he's doing to the hens when I'm not looking) and attacks regularly. I have forbidden him to kick or hurt Moses, so he now carries a child sized wooden rake with him whenever he walks around the yard. He uses that to keep Moses at...

Rooster looks great, but something is clearly wrong...

UPDATE***** Tonight I went out to the coop and actually put Moses down on his back, and inspected him much more closely. Up until now, I had only been looking at and feeling his legs. When I turned him over, his breast bone is very prominent and it is abraded - not bleeding, but like a skinned...

Rooster looks great, but something is clearly wrong...

That is wild that you are having such similar symptoms. Moses is still getting on the roost, but I'll be curious to see if he starts sleeping on the floor. I haven't watched him hop up the ladder to roost but will try to witness that tonight - curious to see how he acts when he does that. His...

Rooster looks great, but something is clearly wrong...

From the 5,000 photos I've stared at on the web, the red streaks look totally normal and are minimal - they look like normal legs, to me. He is definitely eating, drinking and has not lost weight from what I can tell. I'm going to pick him up tomorrow, which he will hate, but at least to have a...

Rooster looks great, but something is clearly wrong...

Thank you all for the input and ideas. I'm baffled, let me tell you. It's possibly he has sprained something, though he's the only rooster and so it would not have been from a fight. He could have fended off something and we didn't see the scuffle, or as you say, it could be from jumping...

Rooster looks great, but something is clearly wrong...

will worm this weekend - I worm in the fall but was wondering if I should be doing it twice/year? Will check tonight for mites/lice; hopefully the critters will be visible if they are there. But nobody else is doing this, just poor Moses. Do mites/lice ever attack just one chicken out of a...

Rooster looks great, but something is clearly wrong...

Nails look normal - like all the other chickens' nails. Felt up his legs and up into the feathered part - but it doesn't seem like an injury because it is generalized and not specifically one area. He's generally walking stiffly and sitting down, not limping or carrying himself weirdly. If I...
