As an update: ILT ran through both of my flocks despite my best biosecurity efforts. Milkshake, the chocolate Orpington this thread started with, passed away.
8/40 birds developed symptoms that persisted. They were all medicated with Tylan for 7 days.
1) Whitey, the white silkie’s eyes were...
The test results came back positive for ILT, infectious laryngotracheitis. She is definitely improving, but she’ll always be a carrier. I’m trying to find a local vet who will sell me vaccine I can administer to my whole flock, but avian vets are INSANELY hard to find in Ontario. And Canada. The...
Yep, her crop seems to be normal. We saw the avian vet Friday; she was pleased to see that Milkshake’s body condition has improved & she’s put on weight. Still on the skinny side for her breed, she’s 4.7 lbs.
Other than the sneezing & serious congestion, she’s still acting normal. Her comb is...
It’s now been over a month since Milkshake’s symptoms began. She has improved, but is still sneezing & gurgling on occasion, especially during the extremely hot days we’ve been having.
I take her to the vet again Friday to get her swabbed & tested for the major diseases.
Here she is...
Today is 15 days since we saw the avian vet. We’ve finished all meds so I’ve just been monitoring her closely. She doesn’t seem to be gurgling anymore, her comb has a bit more colour & she’s more active/less withdrawn. Still sneezing a bit. Here’s hoping she’s finally turned the corner!
I’ll have to check her crop tonight & tomorrow morning; I just assumed it was respiratory as it was brought on suddenly by heat & the stress of transport. No canker or lesions; the vet did examine her airway thoroughly.
We’re now at day 11 of this respiratory issue. Less gurgling, but still some open mouthed breathing & sneezing. It seems to be worst midday. She’s eating & drinking, and runs very fast if watermelon is involved.
The antibiotics, SulfaDiazine Trimethroprim, were finished at day 7. I had hoped to...
She is not gurgling all the time, just when I start chasing her or she gets a little spooked. She sneezes occasionally. No discharge from eyes or beak. The symptoms began the day I picked her up; it was the hottest day of the year so far (43C) & I believe she overheated & got overly stressed on...
It’s now Monday morning. Meds were started Friday evening. It’s been so difficult to get the antibiotics into her with a syringe & I feel like some isn’t getting swallowed.. ugh. I did find a better method to get the meds into her, & that’s soaking watermelon in it. It’s the only thing she goes...
Hiya! I brought a beautiful new bird home: Milkshake, a one year old chocolate Orpington. I believe the stress & heat brought on the illness as I picked her up the hottest day of the year (when it was 42C with the humidex).
She has been gurgling when she breathes & sneezing, though her comb...
