Respiratory infection - vet visit & prescription list

Where are you located? You can check with your state vet lab, or contact Zoologix or RAL lab for private testing. The last 2 will send you swabs and material to collect testing samples, and then you mail them in for PCR testing. Some do panels of multiple diseases. Zoologix is in CA:

RAL is in TX:

Thank you, but I’m in Canada! It’s very difficult to find avian vets & services here.

She is not gurgling all the time, just when I start chasing her or she gets a little spooked. She sneezes occasionally. No discharge from eyes or beak. The symptoms began the day I picked her up; it was the hottest day of the year so far (43C) & I believe she overheated & got overly stressed on the way home. She was completely normal when I examined her at the breeder’s.
Is her crop emptying overnight?
Any lesions or canker inside the beak?

I’ll have to check her crop tonight & tomorrow morning; I just assumed it was respiratory as it was brought on suddenly by heat & the stress of transport. No canker or lesions; the vet did examine her airway thoroughly.

Today is 15 days since we saw the avian vet. We’ve finished all meds so I’ve just been monitoring her closely. She doesn’t seem to be gurgling anymore, her comb has a bit more colour & she’s more active/less withdrawn. Still sneezing a bit. Here’s hoping she’s finally turned the corner!

It’s now been over a month since Milkshake’s symptoms began. She has improved, but is still sneezing & gurgling on occasion, especially during the extremely hot days we’ve been having.

I take her to the vet again Friday to get her swabbed & tested for the major diseases.

Here she is, roosting happily on a power tool:

Thank you for the pics, she's beautiful! So her crop empties normally? I'm looking for info because we picked up a pullet today and she started gurgling. Checking to see if crop empties normally overnight first. Very interested in your results!

Yep, her crop seems to be normal. We saw the avian vet Friday; she was pleased to see that Milkshake’s body condition has improved & she’s put on weight. Still on the skinny side for her breed, she’s 4.7 lbs.

Other than the sneezing & serious congestion, she’s still acting normal. Her comb is bright & she enjoys hopping for peaches & running for mealworms.

The vets took a swab & sent it off to the University of Guelph, Canada’s leading veterinary research lab, to test for infectious bronchitis and infectious laryngotracheitis (IBV & ILT). I should hear back in about a week with results.

Here’s Milkshake enjoying her favourite pastime:

Also thinking at this point if IBV & ILT come back negative, I’ll test for mycoplasma. Milkshake is now my most expensive chicken. LOL.
