I have a flock of 26 hens of various breed, and one BR rooster. They are stressed right now because they have been stuck in their coop toughing out the -35C winter weather. (They normally free range) My smallest hen is a lovely little BR girl, and lately has been the victim of the other hens'...
I was completely kidding around about the "man up" thing. I know they are still babies. I was just curious about his skittish behaviour because I have read about cockerels being pushy, or bossy, even when they are still in the brooder. I have never had a boy before... (even my meaties are...
Just curious to find out what others' thoughts were on this
I had 27 hens... of various breeds (RIR, BR, Delaware, RSL/mix) but one of them turned out to be a boy, that we have decided to keep, providing he has nice manners. Here's the thing though, out of all of the birds, Puck the rooster...
Great thread!!!
Although I don't have any full-time house chickens ( I have a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever...sharing her space with chickens would NOT go over well... ) I still wanted to jump in the conversation (if that's ok)
All of my chicks have always been brooded in the house...
I have 27 chickens. 14 are hens, one is a rooster (so far... lol) and 12 of them are my meat birds and are destined for 'freezer camp' mid-september.
Just curious what is the 'right' number of hens for a rooster?? Will he be ok with a harem of 14 ladies?? I wonder what we should name him?? We...
Hello Everyone!!
I have a very strong feeling that one of my BR pullets is going to crow at me one of these days... what do you think?? All of these chickens are 6.5 weeks old.
We think the one on the left is a little boy...
And the duckies you can see in the background are 'Squeak'...
Hello everyone! I hope someone will be able to point me in the right direction.
Some background...
This is my second year raising chickens, and this year, we decided to try adding 2 ducks to the flock.
When I went to pick up my day-olds, the lady at the feed store had 2 week old Pekin ducklings...
So Kentucky has been in the house in a dog kennel for 2 nights now, since her attack, and I have been letting her out every couple of hours to exercise her leg. She is walking on it with a bad limp... but at least she is using it. She seems to be in better spirits today--as she has finally eaten...
you know, I had no idea that only mammals could get rabies. That's good to know! anyone know if I can put polysporin on her leg? Should I put some sort of dressing on it? or leave it be? Its not bleeding.
Ok, we have taken a good look at her, (her name is Kentucky) and it seems that she has 2 small puncture wounds on her one leg. There is hardly any blood, and she is able to stand on it. We have cleaned up the area around the bite. I suppose now we will have to watch her for rabies, although the...
I'm sorry if this is a repeat post. I don't have time to search at the moment. My husband has just wrestled one of our hens away from a fox, and she is injured. I can't determine the extent of her injuries, because she is obviously scared and in pain, and is not thrilled about us handling her at...
Thank you all so much for your kind words! To some she's "just a chicken" but I knew you'd all understand.
The good news is the rest of my flock doesn't seem to be too badly affected. They gradually all came out of their coop, and all seem like themselves, so luckily I don't have to deal with...
I posted a few days ago with pics of my beloved Honey, and got so many nice compliments on her. Well this morning I let my girls out like I do every morning, and they were all happy to see me, and looking for their treats. When I went to go collect the morning's eggs I found Honey, dead in front...
Hey! I am in Ontario, Canada too!! Where abouts are you? I know all about our winters... We're up in Timmins. brrrrr. lol.
I have one hen that always sleeps in the nest. I just let her be, since it is only one out of 17 that does it. Plus she looks so comfy all tucked in there.
I did have...
Here is a close up of Honey's pretty face... lol
This is a picture of Honey as a baby that I played around with... hehe
And here is one of Honey's 'ostrich' eggs. The one on the left is a 'large egg' from our farmer's market. The one on the right is one of Honey's whoppers. She gives us...
Awwwwww thanks for all the nice comments everyone! You're all so sweet!!
We named her 'Honey' because she is just an absolute doll. She loves being cradled like a baby, and will even lay her head on my arm and nap. She purrs too when you pet her... I swear I'd bring her in the house if I...
