I was hoping to see some set ups people have for their broodies to incubate eggs and where they then house the hen to raise the chicks. I have been using cardboard boxes to house brooding hens then moving the to cages roughly 1.5m by 1.5m when the chicks hatch. I moved them out of their yards to...
I had two doe's due around the same time and they were in seperate identical cages with nest boxes after they had their litters (one had 10 the other had 2). A storm came through when the kittens were 4 weeks old and blew the cages over causing the doors to open. In the morning I went to check...
This is my 10 month old maremma puppy Alfie. He doesnt stay with the chooks, he guards the house and property and the chooks free range around. He would kill chooks if locked in the yard with them so I stopped doing it. He's happier to be free ranging with them. The sheep didn't like him and at...
Thought I'd share a pic of my Cock who came first at the show. There was about 6 other cocks entered and about 8 cockerals entered.
Couldn't get a pic with his whole body in.
It is best to move her out so her chicks are safe and can have water at their level. Throw away the other eggs. I have had a hen hatch chicks then set off early in the morning before I could seperate her, the other hens and roosters were all ignoring her and the chicks. One chick died from...
Haha at least they didnt dump a rooster! Ive had that! If they are laying eggs and thats what you want you should keep them if you dont want broodys you should look at a breed that hardly goes broody.
Probably wise to treat everything for mites just in case the new ones have brought them in.
Yep, shes a bit agressive at the moment!
The rooster doesnt look like he has the correct shape and colour. The hen is darker which is closer to the hertiage colour. Would need some closer pics. But looking like productions.
Did you get them from a hatchery?
If you could post some more pics of your other birds it would give a good indication. Rhode islands do go broody but I find it not to be constant. Out of 30 birds in my breeding pen I have one broody at the moment and in spring I'll probably have one or two more. The crosses or production reds...
