I went out & one has a head injury from being picked on, some of the ones I suspect are girls have some feathers missing on their heads. It's just time, I know I really should do it today. I know my covey will be significantly easier to manage afterwards, I have 2 boys in their own large...
It's gonna be at most 4-6 quail, it seems like it should be small and manageable and yet it makes me freeze up now thinking about it! I was so confident in this previously, I'm not sure the butcher near me would take such a small amount of animals, and the cost would be over $5 a bird. Nobody...
I've pushed off dispatching twice, just a total shutdown 🥲 I was extremely confident going into this, but now that it's time to buy a nice pair of shears and sit down and do it, I'm second guessing myself. What if I don't have the stomach to eat them? What if I feel sick gutting them? I wanted...
Thanks! so osiris isn't feather sexable either? Bummer, it's a pretty pattern but fingers crossed it's a girl! So far everyone is getting along but that's just how adolescence goes
Hoping I can hang onto at least one of the heavypied/whites, the grey & scarlett, and as much as I love my...
Can I get some confirmation on sex/gender on the few that are feather sexable? Spotelo likely male, King Tut male, Osiris...? Any others? Hoping to pick one male and cull the rest soon. The sibling who is quite behind them hasn't improved too much so she'll likely be a cull too, just failure to...
I am pleasantly surprised! I'm not sure what they are, but I definitely thought I had two pharaoh and two pararoah pied/white with the head dots and color me surprised lol
https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/quail-chick-colors.1673548 They grew up so fast! Some for sure ended up as expected, but I sure am surprised at the variety and some of the weirdness going on here! My pharoah hen Razzle had a prolapse issue with a weird egg, I'll make a post with a photo...
Not sure what happened. The baby passed last night, I took them out and wrapped them in a towel after checking on them and seeing them actively declining, ending up sitting crying/alerting non stop with eyes squeezed shut. I was holding them slightly angled down as I mentally prepped myself for...
I grabbed a bag of chick feed with 30% protein instead of our 28% to maybe help give them a little boost. Will give some egg yolk today too probably unless you guys think it'd be a bad idea/too much change. I got corid, I'm dosing it out now, hopefully these little guys recover fast. Should I do...
It's hard to get a photo with the white flash vs the yellow heat lamp light but it's 100% blood not a cecal. I'm not sure what spurred this on, they just moved to a new enclosure but I made sure to wash everything the best I could. I'm heading out now to the feedstore to see what they have in...
I'm a little bit panicked right now, we haven't had coccidia before if that even is what this is. I'm going into an hour long work meeting so I can't go get anything right this moment but once it's done I'm running to the nearest feed store or pet store, wherever I can get some little medication...
So far she's very lively! It's a bummer that I probably wouldn't be able to breed her unless she ends up to be another color, for safety and all that. Wild that there was all of these genetics in these little $4 quails. I wonder where originally that gentleman got them... This has certainly been...
Sweet! I can't wait to see the patterning on these guys mature. I know pied/tuxedo isn't a base color, I just meant I know all of them are pied already because of the yellow/white markings
I think the yellow is the light, the top picture of them both together is under white light :D They seem about the same "base" color with the stripes being the major differing color
Other chicks & parents are here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/quail-chick-colors.1673548
#10 this chick is light/cream in color with a slightly darker/orangeish head and light patterning. She reminds me of how her mom looked as a chick (below)
Mom: yellow with darker near the...
