    Non. Stop. Peeping.

Hello! I have used a hearing scope that drs use to check his lungs etc, he has no congestion or issues there! He has a full, warm red heat lamp. He is not cold. Even under the heat lamp, he screams. (Unless were just..standing in the room) We seperated WeteyesMcGee into his own private area so...

    Can't sleep!

You should get yourself a brooder plate if you’re talking about a heat lamp. They still need heat and if you’re worried about the light disturbing them, then a brooder plate takes care of that!

Review by 'gtaus' in article 'Common Hazards In The Poultry Yard'

Excellent article. I do have one concern that you did not mention. I use two heat lamps in my brooder setup because I can see if the light is on and warming the chicks. I know many people are now using the "safer" mama pad heaters and tents for their brooders. But if you read some negative...

    Wrath's Marans

Yesterday was a busy day and forgot I grabbed some crappy pics of the little's move day to King's coop... Weather isn't nice today but I'll let them run around the coop for a bit today under close watch if they want to come out of their new space. When I carried out the clear plastic tote they...

Well, I redid the brooder area and added the sandbox.

Somehow, even though I doubled the size, it doesn't look any bigger because of the sand box. And they refuse to use the helpful, gentle stairs and keep throwing themselves off the sides, which is making me super nervous because that's a 6.5" drop. They are around 11 days old at this point. I...

    Incubator babies now what?

Thanks so much for the info. Yes the light is a heat lamp. Appreciate the advise. How much space will the babies need? We have built a containment area for them when they small and have a fenced off area next to my other chickens when they bigger and will put the box and heat lamp in there. A...

    Transitioning to Coop

At 8 weeks they've been fully feathered for a couple of weeks and should be fine. Congratulations on your first flock! No you don't need to dip their beaks. They'll find the water by smell. They may or may not, at first. I don't worry about it. It's okay for them to sleep on the floor, as long...

    Shipped Quail Eggs-Arrived Ice Cold

I’m aware of the differences. The temps on top of the 2 pads is reading at 85-90 degrees which is probably a bit cool and the brooder is right at 93 degree since the cool side has screen. The lamp is solely for light so they can see. I don’t use heating lamps with my quail or chicks. I live in a...

    Peachicks imprinted on Furbo camera

Hello all, I'm open to some criticism and also just need a space to tear my hair out a bit. This is my second year having peafowl, but my first time raising peachicks from the egg. I had two hatch on 5/11. Both struggled to hatch- no external pip on both after internal pip for 20 hrs- then...

    no heat no light brooder

The best part is 2:15 as the kitten dives in. It stays and shows up occasionally. Cute! I'm not sure what he's using in those sacks, but day-old chicks need heat, so there's something unless the temp there is in the low 90s. 100% on the no brooder light at night!! They vaccinate for a...

3 week chicks, acting fine but suddenly dying

No appetite decreased, water consumption did increase. They've been fine until they're not then they just suddenly convulse and drop. They have been fluffing their feathers out so I did adjust the heat lamp prior to this. I may need to raise it significantly higher maybe? That's why I'm also...

    Supporting my new little bantam

Hi everyone - this is my and my husband's second time getting chicks (last time 2 years ago). This year we ordered 4 chicks from Meyers: an olive egger, splash maran, cochin bantam, and lavender ameraucana. They shipped on Monday and USPS did a fantastic job getting them here, I was able to pick...

    Hello All

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined. I'm going to be that person... Those guides are just that, very loose guides. I have raised chicks out in a coop when temps dipped into the low 20s at night. Those chicks were not kept in an environment where some or even most of the area was...

    no heat no light brooder

There absolute is no heat. They used to be called hatbox brooders, although recently I’ve heard them called fire less brooders also. The box is insulated, so retains the body heat from the chicks. Obviously there is a minimum number of chicks where this is possible.

42% morality rate at 72 hrs

Yeah we have tried all the above lol, we just purchased and incubator and we will try it that route.

42% morality rate at 72 hrs

I think it's just tricky the way they say it, but they def only mean for a few hours (and kinda depending the ambient temp). I saw a video that breaks down this exact thing (cackle and them recommending a higher temps), but I think the way cackle explains it is missing some nuances... Video...

    Heat lamp vs electric brooder

Thank you so much!!! The area I was going to keep them stays around 60 degrees as well :)

Thistlewick Smallholding - Chickens & Sheep (for now)

So I think this is possibly the duck egg?? I don't know it just feels different in my hand lol Here are both mystery eggs in comparison. Smaller one 2 days ago. Bigger one today. It's giant for a pullet egg so I don't think it's a pullet. Maybe Custard fixed her egg maker. This is her...

    This chick needs a name!

This baby was a singleton - the only one to hatch out of 6. I've been spending a lot of time with her (I wing sexed her at 2 days old and think female but who knows) because I don't want her to be lonely. She loves toothbrush chin scratches and she ate a few mosquitos while she was sitting in my...

Do they still need a Heat Lamp

How many chicks? I usually have 15-25 chicks at a time, use a brooder plate which is removed when they are about 3 weeks and they are raised in the coop with outside lows and highs mid 30s to 40s. If you only have a couple, less than six, you might want to have a heat source for them at night...
