    Pink hair tape on silkies????

I had the same problem with one of my Silkies - when i would let her out to free range, if she got more than a couple feet from the coop, so looked totally lost. I decided to give her a little hair cut, just around her face, with my kids' safety scissors. Seemed to help a lot.

It is ok to put Quikrete Play Sand in the coop?

I actually did that for my girls this winter - used one of those shallow under-bed storage bins and filled it with play sand and they LOVED it. I figure if i'd let my kids play in it, its more than OK for my chickens. Go for it, i'd say

    Silkie thread!

I wonder if anyone else has considered giving their Silkie a 'hair' cut? I have 2 hens and 2 roos and one of my girls has such a Poof that im sure she cant see very well. I want to trim around her eyes a little bit because she doesnt seem to forage around like all of my other birds.

I hear ya! I took me months to talk my DH into "letting" me have chickens - i promised him only 6...well, no more than 10...PROMISE. Well, last month he pointed out an ad on Craigslist and we brought home 9 more, and just last week i came home from work and found him firing up the incubator for...

Just set 23 Delaware's!! Anyone else setting eggs today??

Ahuh! The last thing i need is more chickens, but we set 12 Javas and 4 Silkies tonight! I tell myself that im just 'testing' the fertility of the Silkies because both the hen and roo are young and just getting started. And the Javas are some that my husband brought home from a friend.

Has anyone used a plastic container as a brooder?

I would buy the largest Plastic tote I could find - and if it seems too big for the new chicks at first just make a simple divider with cardboard or something to cut the space in half - they grow so fast they'll need the extra space before you know it. You'll also want to rig something up so you...
